Tournament Champions
As the fall colors begin to overtake the leaves, the Upstate Amateur Players Tour continues to ramp up its new 2025 golf season. It continued on Saturday with a tournament at Woodfin Ridge Golf Club in Inman, SC.
The Upstate Amateur Players Tour travels the Upstate of South Carolina, along with portions of North Carolina, offering golfers of all skill levels a chance to compete across ten different divisions. The tour kicked off its new golf season last month, and has a full slate of tournaments on the schedule for the upcoming year.
The Upstate Amateur Players Tour is designed by the players, for the players, as Saturday’s tournament featured over $3,800 in cash and VISA gift card payouts. Each tournament also includes an optional cash skins game for the competitors.
Saturday, the golfers enjoyed a beautiful day filled with sunny skies and somewhat cool temperatures. Nestled in Inman, South Carolina, Woodfin Ridge Golf Club is one of the most pristine courses in the area. At the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Woodfin Ridge is located along Lake Bowen and features several scenic holes, including the feature finishing holes of No. 9 and No. 18.
Here’s a breakdown of the results from Saturday’s tournament by division:
Division 1 – Two birdies in his final three holes proved to be enough for TJ Hines to take the top spot in Division 1 on Saturday with a round of 76. Hines shot 41 on the front nine before opening the back nine with a string of four straight pars. His birdies came on the par-four 16th hole and the par-five 18th hole. BJ Humphries finished runner-up with a round of 78. Humphries round was highlighted by a birdie on the 16th hole as he played his final seven holes in even par. Butch Longcoy finished third with a round of 81, followed by Frank Mattson who rounded out the division with a round of 92 in fourth place.
Division 2 – Carlos Santana jumped out to an early lead with an even par round of 36 on the front nine en route to shooting 75 and winning Division 2 on Saturday. Santana started his round on the right foot with a birdie on the opening hole. He ended the front nine with a birdie as well on the par-five ninth hole. Bob Grove finished second with a round of 78. Grove made a back nine charge with a pair of birdies to play his final seven holes in one under par. Robert McCully came home in third place after carding a 79. Zack Boyd and Matt Miller rounded out the top five in the division with rounds of 80 and 81, respectively.
Senior Division 2 – Inman native Norm Russell made himself right at home on Saturday, using a pair of back nine birdies to score the victory with a round of 75. Russell birdied the long par-five fourth hole en route to a 37 on the front nine. Russell’s two back nine birdies came on the 14th and 17th holes on the back nine. Bob Grove finished runner-up with a round of 78, followed by Robert McCully in third place with a score of 79. Cuong Ton, Trent Whitfield, and Andy Stevenson rounded out the top five in a tie for fourth place with rounds of 85.
Division 3 – Dan Eastep found his groove at just the right time, making eight pars on the back nine to shoot 80 and win Division 3 on Saturday. Eastep shot 43 on the front nine before going on a streak of eight straight pars to open the back nine. Darrius Prysock made a back nine charge with a pair of birdies on the par-four 10th hole and par-three 15th hole. His round of 82 earned him second place in the division. Mark Lytle finished third with a round of 87, followed by a tie for fourth place involving Andrew Gray and Mark Stroupe, who both posted rounds of 89.
Senior Division 3 – Dan Eastep made it a clean sweep on Saturday as his round of 80 was also 80 was also enough to win Senior Division 3. Eastep outpaced the field by four shots thanks to his solid play down the stretch on the back nine. Lyle Gumer finished second with a round of 84, followed by Mark Lytle in third with an 87. Lytle made the only birdie on the division, as it came on the par-four seventh hole. Mark Stroupe and Jeff Pauley rounded out the top five with rounds of 89 and 95, respectively.
Division 4 – Fred Carvalho and Shane Baldwin found themselves locked in a tight battle Division 4 on Saturday as in the end it was Carvalho who emerged victorious with a round of 84. Carvalho buckled down on the final few holes, making birdie on the par-four 16th that proved to be the difference. Baldwin found his groove on the back nine, charging up the leader board with five pars and just four bogeys. Baldwin carded a round of 85, just one shot behind Carvalho. Justin Sartain and Scott Bryant tied for third place with rounds of 89. Sartain got off to a solid start to his round with four pars in the first six holes. Robert Gibson and George Bright rounded out the top five in a tie for fifth place with rounds of 90.
Senior Division 4 – Fred Carvalho’s victory in Senior Division 4 was a little less stressful as he cleared the field by four shots to complete the clean sweep of the weekend. Carvalho’s highlight of the round came on the par-four 16th hole where he made birdie. Scott Bryant finished runner-up in the division with a round of 89. Bryant made three birdies on the front nine, as he played his final seven holes of the opening stretch in just four over par. Robert Gibson and George Bright tied for third place with rounds of 90, followed by Harold Heath in fifth place with a round of 92.
Division 5 – Playing his last three holes in two over par proved to be just enough for Shawn Parfitt as he claimed the top spot in Division 5 on Saturday with a round of 89. Parfitt made birdie on the par-three 11th hole en route to shooting 46 on the inward stretch. Tim Kunkel and Danny Sullivan were close behind, tying for second place with rounds of 90. Bill Turner and Dick Jenkins rounded out the top five in the division in a tie for fourth place after posting rounds of 91.
Senior Division 5 – Eighteen holes of golf were not enough to decide a winner in Senior Division 5 as in the end it was Danny Sullivan who emerged victorious after the playoff. Sullivan and Kunkel both shot 90 to reach the playoff. Sullivan made two birdies on the day to lead the division, coming on the par-five ninth hole and the par-four 12th hole. Kunkel made his lone birdie of the round on the par-four seventh hole. Bill Turner shot 91 to finish third, as Dick Jenkins finished fourth. Gene Mason rounded out the top five in the division with a round of 97.
