Saturday marked the first trip for many to the Lowcountry’s newest 18-hole championship golf course as the Charleston Amateur Players Tour hosted its tournament at the Golf Club at Hilton Head Lakes.

The competition Saturday was for over $1,600 in cash and VISA gift card prizes paid to the top finishers in each division. The Charleston Amateur Players Tour travels the Lowcountry of South Carolina offering golfers of all skill levels a chance to compete in one of 10 different divisions.

The Golf Club at Hilton Head Lakes is the Lowcountry’s newest 18-hole championship golf course. Expertly designed by Tommy Fazio to take full advantage of the property’s lakes and natural wetlands, the versatile course offers five sets of tees—a challenge for golfers of all skill levels.

With deliberately angled greens, expansive fairways, and well-placed bunkers, the Par 72, 7,300-yard course offers a variety of holes to test a golfer’s creativity, shot-making skills and strategic thinking.

Saturday’s tournament was just the second of the new season for the Charleston Amateur Players Tour. Here’s a breakdown of the results by each division:

Division 1 – Eighteen holes of golf were not enough to decide a winner in the top division on Saturday, as Ryan Bakken and Michael Huh met in a playoff after both players carded rounds of 73. In the end, it was Bakken who emerged victorious. Bakken made a back nine charge with three birdies, including a final one on the par-five 16th hole to climb to the top of the leaderboard. Huh made a pair of birdies on the way in to shoot one over par on the back nine, tying Bakken. Jr Torres finished in third place with a round of 75. The highlight of his round was his birdie on the par-five 16th hole. TJ Hines shot 76 to finish in fourth place, followed by Thomas Owens in fifth with a score of 81.

Division 2 – Chuck Bell positioned himself nicely atop the leader board with eight pars on the front nine en route to carding a round of 77 and winning Division 2 on Saturday. Bell made 14 pars on the day, remaining steady to win by three shots over the next competitor. Jeff Sheidow shot 80 to finish second. Sheidow made an impressive eagle on the par-four 11th hole to start his inward stretch. The eagle was accompanied by four pars to start his final nine holes. John Tompkins shot 81 to finish third. Tompkins made birdie on the par-five 12th hole to highlight his round. Sean Mason rounded out the division with a round of 85 in fourth place.

Senior Division 2 – The same battle played out in Senior Division 2 between Chuck Bell and Jeff Sheidow as Bell’s round of 77 was enough to earn him the top honors. After a double bogey on his second hole of the day, Bell recovered with seven straight pars to close the front nine. Sheidow’s eagle on the par-four 11th hole tightened the battle, though Sheidow fell just short in his comeback effort.

Division 3 – Extra golf was needed to determine a winner in Division 3 on Saturday as Larry Penfield was crowned the winner when the dust settled with a round of 79. Penfield and Scott Johnson tied after 18 holes of golf with rounds of 79 before the playoff decided the winner. Penfield shot two over par on the front nine, aided by a birdie on the par-five seventh hole. Penfield made enough pars down the stretch to force reach the playoff before prevailing. Johnson played his final four holes in one under par to reach the playoff. Johnson birdied the par-five 16th hole to go along with three other pars in his final four holes. Jeff Price finished third with a round of 81, followed by Allen Morrell and Tony Mizzell, who carded rounds of 82 to tie for fourth place.

Senior Division 3 – Larry Penfield’s victory in Senior Division 3 came with a little less stress as his round of 79 cleared the field by two shots. Penfield played his final four holes on the front nine in one under par with a birdie on the par-five seventh hole. The strong finish to the outward stretch positioned Penfield with just nine holes left to play. Jeff Price shot 81 to finish second. Price made birdie on the par-four sixth hole en route to shooting three over par on the front nine. Allen Morrell and Tony Mizzell tied for third place with rounds of 82, followed by Chris Huge in fifth place with a score of 91.

Division 4 – Kenneth Johnson saved his best golf for the back nine, making four pars to solidify his victory in Division 4 with a round of 84. Johnson made consecutive pars on Nos. 11 and 12 before two par pars on Nos. 15 and 16. Rick Battaglia and James Nemes were in hot pursuit, tying for second place with rounds of 86. Nemes made the lone birdie in the division, as it came on the par-four 10th hole Phillip Bush rounded out the division with a round of 93 in fourth place.

Senior Division 4 – James Nemes’ birdie on the par-four 10th hole proved to be the difference in making the playoff, and later winning Senior Division 4 with a round of 86. Nemes and Rick Battaglia tied with rounds of 86 before Nemes prevailed in the playoff. Phillip Bush rounded out the division with a round of 93 in third place.

Division 5 – Three pars made at three shot difference for Leroy Anderson as his round of 96 was enough to win Division 5. Anderson cleared second-place finisher Brendan Daniels by just three shots as Daniles carded a round of 99. Anderson’s pars came on the front nine to shoot 45 on the outward stretch. Daniels made a pair of pars, one on the front nine, and another on the back nine.
