Close competition was the story of the day this past weekend, as the Upstate Amateur Players Tour traveled to Chickasaw Point Golf Club in Westminster, SC. With over $4,100 in cash and VISA gift card prizes on the line, the tournament featured a strong field across the various divisions, navigating the rolling terrain and challenging layout of one of South Carolina’s hidden gems.

Set against the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Chickasaw Point’s 18-hole, par-72 course presents an unexpected experience nestled in nature with undulating topography and tree-lined fairways while offering challenging moments for the novice to experienced golfer. Saturday brought ideal conditions for golfers, as they enjoyed the afternoon of competition as the summer is now in full swing.

The Upstate Amateur Players Tour travels the Upstate of South Carolina, along with portions of North Carolina and Georgia, offering golfers of all skill levels a chance to compete in one of 10 divisions, including senior divisions as well. The tour is designed by the players, for the players, and features a world-class experience each tournament.

Here’s a breakdown of the results from Saturday’s tournament:

Division 1 – Jackson Hill’s steady round proved to be enough to take the top spot in Division 1 on Saturday. The Athens, GA native carded a round of 76 that was highlighted by a birdie on the par-five sixth hole. Hill cleared second place finisher Carlos Santana by just two shots, as Sanatana finished runner-up with a round of 78.

Santana got off to a solid start, making seven pars on the front nine to card a round of 38. After a tough start to the back nine, Santana settled in, paring five out of his last six holes to finish in second place.

Charles Hartley finished third with a round of 81, followed by Christopher White in fourth place with a score of 85.

Division 2 – Three birdies on the front nine helped Adam Moore card a round of one under par, 35, en route to his score of 75 to win Division 2 on Saturday. Moore’s three front nine birdies came in the first seven holes, as he took advantage of the par-five second hole with a birdie before making another on the par-four fifth hole. His final birdie came on the par-four seventh hole.

A crowded field was close behind Moore, as A.J. Lee, Sean Pierce, and Blake House finished in a tie for second place after all three golfers posted rounds of 79. Like Moore, Lee also made three birdies on the day, two of which came in a three-hole stretch on the back nine. Lee made birdie on the par-three 13th hole before another came on the par-five 15th.

Pierce overcame a difficult front nine to shoot 37 on the back nine, including back-to-back birdies on the 10th and 11th holes. House’s highlight of the round came when he made birdie on the par-five 11th hole.

Chris Lombardozzi rounded out the top five with a score of 81 in fifth place.

Senior Division 2 – While Blake House came up just short in Division 2, his round of 79 was enough to clear the field in Senior Division 2 as he took home the top prize. House made five pars on the front nine as he shot 40 to open the day. After making birdie on the par-five 11th hole, House managed to clear the field by three strokes as he secured the victory.

James Teston and Anthony Stout finished tied for second place with rounds of 82. Teston made two birdies on the day, including one on the par-four third hole. Stout started in high fashion, making birdie on the first hole, leading to his second place finish.

Dan Eastep and Andy Steveson rounded out the top five in the division with rounds of 83 and 85, respectively. Stevenson made two birdies on the day, birding the 17th and 18th holes to close his round.

Division 3 – Ten golfers finished within five shots of the lead as a playoff was needed to determine the winner in Division 3 as Cody Markovich and Gregg Pruitt finished tied with rounds of 82. In the end, it was Markovich who emerged victorious.

Markovich’s steady day included rounds of 41 on each side as he and Pruitt lobbied for the top spot. Pruitt led the division with three birdies, taking an early front nine lead by three strokes as he played the stretch in just two over par. Markovich had a four-hole stretch on the back nine that he played in even par, making up the difference on the leaderboard.

Wayne Blyler and Laramie Stephens were close behind in a tie for third place, just a stroke back as the two posted rounds of 83. Blyler made six pars on the front nine to settle into his round as Stephens overcome two challenging holes on the back nine to shoot 83.

Weston Brown rounded out the top five with a score of 84.

Senior Division 3 – Wayne Blyler’s impressive round of 83 was just a single stroke short of the playoff in Division 3. However, that was not the case in Senior Division 3 as the Gray Court, SC native claimed the top spot with a two-stroke victory. Blyler’s steady front nine included six pars and three bogeys before he made birdie on the par-four 10th hole.

Sonny Smith shot 85 to finish second. Smith got off to a solid start, making pars on his first four holes. Jeff Pauley finished third with a score of 86, followed by Mark Lytle in fourth place with a round of 87.

Division 4 – David Croston emerged from a crowded field of challengers, making eagle on the par-five 11th hole en route to victory by one shot with a round of 85. The division featured 20 golfers, five of which finished within four shots of Croston. After making birdie on the par-five sixth hole, Croston continued to go to work on the par fives, making an eagle, 3, on the 11th hole.

Robert Gibson finished second with a round of 86, followed by Jason Upright and Scott Bryant in a tie for third place with scores of 87. Gibson made his line birdie on the day on the par-four third hole. Rodney Oden finished fifth, carding a round of 89.

Senior Division 4 – David Croston made it a clean sweep of the weekend, earning the top honors in Senior Division 4 as well with a round of 85. Croston’s round was highlighted by his eagle on the par-five 11th hole. Croston also made birdie on the par-five sixth hole.

Robert Gibson was close behind in second place, carding a round of 86. After a difficult start, Gibson settled in with a birdie on the par-four third hole. Scott Bryant finished third with a round of 87, followed by Peter Fahey in fourth place, posting a score of 92. Calvin Carter rounded out the top five with a score of 93.

Division 5 – Wyatt Fulbright staved off valiant charges on the back nine from Vern Verna, Bruce Hutchinson, and Dick Jenkins to win Division 5 Saturday with a score of 95. Fulbright made four pars on the day, two of which came on the back nine – proving to be the difference.

Vern Verna finished second, just one shot behind with a round of 96. Verna made a back nine charge, making three pars in his final six holes, including the final two. Bruce Hutinson and Dick Jenkins tied for third place after posting rounds of 97. Hutchinson made birdie on the par-five sixth hole as Jenkins made his birdie on the par-three 17th hole, climbing the leaderboard. Bill Turner rounded out the top five with a score of 98.

Senior Division 5 – While Vern Verna’s back nine charge fell just short in Division 5, it was enough to win Senior Division 5 as the Greenville, SC native carded a round of 96 to claim the top spot. Verna made three pars on the front, including two in a row on the 8th and 9th holes. He closed the back nine in the same fashion to secure the victory.

Dick Jenkins finished second with a score of 97, followed by Bill Turner in third place after posting a 98. Turner made his lone birdie of the day on the par-five 11th hole. Tim Kunkel and Emmett Warner rounded out the top five with rounds of 99 and 101, respectively.
