    Midwest City Open Recap

    John Conrad Golf Course

34 APT members visited Midwest City on Saturday, October 4th to play the Midwest City Open. Other than wind blowing 15 mph with gusts up to 20 mph, the weather was perfect. The contest started with Division 1 where we had the 2024 Player of the Year, the newly crowned 2025 POY, and the winners of our tournament finals, at Winter Creek Golf Club and the APT- OKC Open at Rose Creek Golf Club.

D1- The front nine concluded with Tour Finals winner Dominic Stevens holding a narrow lead at 1-under par. Reigning Rhino Roofing Player of the Year, Taylor Gossett, trailed by a single stroke at even par, while 2024 POY Brandon Troutman and APT–OKC Open champion Corey Cupp sat six shots back at +5. Dominic’s steady play, featuring two birdies and one bogey, gave him the edge over Taylor’s balanced card of one birdie and one bogey.

The back nine delivered a flurry of excitement as the foursome combined for 12 birdies. Brandon Troutman mounted a spirited comeback with four birdies, but two costly bogeys limited his progress. He closed with a 2-under back nine, finishing 3-over for the tournament.

Dominic and Taylor matched birdies on the par-5 12th, maintaining Dominic’s one-stroke advantage. The momentum shifted on the short par-3 13th when Taylor’s bogey extended Dominic’s lead to two. However, Dominic stumbled on the 14th after an aggressive birdie attempt rolled five feet past the hole, leading to a bogey. Taylor capitalized with a precise wedge to two feet, next to the hole, converting the birdie to tie for the lead.

Both contenders birdied the par-5 16th, keeping the duel tight. Dominic regained the lead with a birdie on 17, setting up a dramatic finish. Heading to the 18th, Dominic stood at 3-under with Taylor one shot behind. Under pressure, Taylor delivered a clutch birdie on the final hole, matching Dominic’s par to force a playoff at 3-under.

In the playoff on the first hole, both players found the fairway with their drives. Taylor’s approach landed ten feet from the pin, while Dominic faced a longer birdie attempt. Dominic’s putt missed, leaving Taylor a chance to seal the win. Rising to the moment once again, Taylor drained his ten-footer to capture the Midwest City Open victory in dramatic fashion.

D2- Division 2 may not have featured a playoff, but it delivered every bit of the excitement seen in Division 1. We welcomed a new member, Jeremy Selph to APT. The day began with Michael Chambless in control, opening with five straight pars before stumbling with three consecutive bogeys and a double bogey to finish the front nine at 5-over, three shots behind the leader.

Nate Carnley, the Tour Finals champion at Winter Creek Golf Club, started steady with a birdie and a bogey through five holes, but three straight bogeys left him one back of the lead after nine. Brad Jefferson also struggled early, carding two bogeys and a double bogey to sit two shots behind.

At the turn, the leaders were tied at 2-over, though they arrived there in different ways. John Behrend opened with three bogeys, then rallied with two birdies and a bogey over the next three holes to finish the front nine at 2-over. Jordan Wesley, the 2024 Player of the Year, posted two bogeys and one birdie through eight holes to lead heading into the ninth, but a bogey there dropped him into a tie with John at 2-over.

On the back nine, Nate couldn’t find the spark needed to challenge, finishing with a solid 79. Brad fell into trouble with three straight bogeys to start the back nine but recovered with a birdie on the par-5 16th and two closing pars for a 6-over 78.

The real drama unfolded among the top three. Jordan and John remained at 2-over through 11 holes, while Michael stayed at 5-over after two pars. A birdie on the 14th brought Michael within two of Jordan, and when Jordan bogeyed the 15th, the gap closed to one. John slipped back with bogeys on 12, 13, and 14, moving to 5-over and three behind.

Michael’s determination showed as he birdied the 16th to reach 3-over, matching Jordan after his bogey on 15. Jordan and John both birdied 16, moving to 2-over and 4-over respectively. A costly bogey on 17 dropped Michael to 4-over, while Jordan extended his lead with a birdie to move to 1-over. Heading to the 18th, Jordan needed only a par to secure the win, holding a three-shot cushion over Brad and Michael. Playing one group ahead, Brad birdied the final hole while Jordan bogeyed, trimming the lead to one but not enough to overtake him. Michael, needing to hole out from the fairway to tie, came close but settled for a birdie to finish in a tie with Brad for second place.

Jordan Wesley claimed the victory, taking an early lead in the Rhino Roofing Player of the Year points race and reaffirming his status as one of Division 2’s most consistent competitors.

D3-Division 3 featured the largest field of the tournament, with 11 players competing for the trophy. Two new members joined the APT after playing on another tour, adding fresh competition to an already strong lineup.

Stephen Pilant set the pace early, carding two birdies and two bogeys on the front nine to finish even par. Newcomer Stephen Badley played steady golf, posting one bogey to finish at 1-over, just one shot behind Pilant. APT Tour veteran Michael Foster recorded one birdie and four bogeys for a 39, three shots back. The 2025 Player of the Year runner-up, Chris Arledge, turned in a 4-over 40 to sit four behind. Erik Hernandez and Justin Gates each finished the front nine at 5-over, while Devon Oku posted a 42.

Michael and Chris both wrapped up their rounds with matching 81s, but each managed to claim a skin and a super skin. Foster birdied the challenging par-3 15th to earn his, while Arledge made one of only two eagles on the day with a 3 on the par-5 16th. Though neither contended for the win, both walked away with some well-earned cash.

The battle for the title quickly became a two-man race between Pilant and Badley, separated by just one stroke for most of the day. Pilant stumbled out of the gate on the back nine with a triple bogey on the 10th, while Badley’s bogey gave him a one-shot lead. Both players bogeyed the 11th before Pilant responded with a birdie on the 12th to regain the advantage. A par from Badley and a bogey from Pilant on the 13th flipped the lead once again.

Pilant’s resilience showed as he followed a bogey with another birdie on the 14th, reclaiming the lead when Badley bogeyed the same hole. The turning point came on the par-5 16th, where Badley’s double bogey gave Pilant breathing room. Pilant capitalized with a birdie on the 17th to seal the victory by four strokes. Stephen Pilant finished with five birdies and a 2-over 74 to capture the win, while Stephen Badley closed with a 6-over 78 in an impressive APT debut.

D4- Seven experienced APT players teed it up in Division 4, each looking to claim the trophy. By the end of the front nine, four players had separated themselves from the rest of the field. Brody Young and Neil Hill led the way with matching 5-over 41s, while Wesley Acuff, Rodney Woodard, and Bryan Jennings trailed by 1, 3, and 4 strokes respectively.

Rodney started the back nine at 4-over through 15 holes but a costly triple bogey on the 16th ended his hopes of a comeback with only two holes remaining. Wesley, who recorded the tournament’s second eagle on the front nine, struggled on the back side, shooting 7-over to finish at 13-over for the day. Bryan rebounded from a rough front nine with a strong back nine of 40, good enough to tie Wesley for third place.

The battle for the win came down to Brody and Neil. After 13 holes, Brody stood at 8-over and Neil at 9-over. Over the next four holes, Brody played 3-over to reach 11-over, while Neil went 2-over to also sit at 11-over heading to the final hole. Playing in the group ahead, Brody made a steady par on 18, leaving Neil with a chance to tie or win with a par or birdie. Neil’s bogey on the closing hole sealed the victory for Brody Young, who captured the Division 4 title with a composed finish under pressure.

D5- Division 5 welcomed new member Anthony Clifton, who made his APT debut in his first-ever tournament. Despite the challenges of tournament play, Anthony enjoyed the experience and showed promise throughout the round.

The front nine featured a tight contest, with scores ranging from 9-over by leader Robert Tyndall to 13-over by Tulsa Chapter’s Thomas Eslinger. Max Flowers finished the front nine at 10-over, while Coby Albro and Jared Cogburn each turned in 12-over. Jared entered the event fresh off his victory at the Tour Finals at Winter Creek Golf Club.

After 13 holes, Anthony stood at 17-over but celebrated a highlight moment with a birdie 2 on the par-3 13th. He ultimately finished with a 100 in his first tournament appearance. Thomas was 18-over after 13 and, despite a par on the 14th, closed with an 8-over stretch across the final four holes to post a 98. Jared reached 17-over through 13 and appeared poised for a late charge after back-to-back pars on 15 and 16, but two closing triples left him with a 96.

Coby was 15-over after 13 and finished strong with a 94, tying for second place with Max. Max, who led Coby by two after the front nine, stood even with him at 15-over through 13 and matched his 94 by the end of the round.

Robert Tyndall maintained steady control throughout the day, leading after the front nine and never relinquishing his advantage. At 13-over through 13 holes, he held a two-shot lead over Coby and Max. Finishing the final five holes at 5-over, Robert secured a four-shot victory and claimed the Division 5 trophy with a final score of 90.
