Tournament Champions
The Upstate Amateur Players Tour made its first trip to Georgia this season, as the tour traveled to Elbert County for a tournament at Arrowhead Pointe Golf Course.
Designed back in 2001 the Bob Walker designed masterpiece is nestled in the Northeast Georgia mountains. Located on Richard B. Russell State Park, the championship 18-hole golf course is located inside the Georgia state park, with 10 of the 18 holes skirting the shoreline of Lake Richard B. Russell.
While much of the water does not come into play it can guarantee both a challenge and some of the best views in the state. The elevation changes, doglegs and well-placed bunkers will demand the use of every club in the bag. The Tifeagle Bermuda greens may not look intimidating, but the subtle breaks will make sure competitors are on their game to score.
Here’s a breakdown of the results from Sunday’s tournament by division:
Division 1 – Carlos Santana managed to keep his scorecard relatively clean as his steady round of 74 was enough to win Division 1. Santana made two birdies on the day, the last of which came on the par-five 10th hole. Santana played the front nine in even par, making birdie on the par-four sixth hole.
Joe Brooks, Rodric Oberholt, and Randy Lamb finished in a tie for second place, just three strokes behind Santana. Brooks closed his front nine in style, birding his final two holes of the opening stretch. Overholt opened his round with an eagle on the par-five first hole as he shot 37 on the front. Lamb made two birdies on his round, including one on the par-four 14th hole to play his final five holes in one over par.
John Schiemer rounded out the top five in the division with a round of 79, featuring a pair of birdies on the front nine.
Division 2 – Logan Pendergrass pared 11 of his final 12 holes, paving the way to a one-stroke victory over the field in Division 2 with a round of 77. Pendergrass made his lone birdie of the day on the par-five fifth hole, playing his last six holes of the front nine in even par.
Weston Brown and Olivia Shields finished tied for second place with rounds of 78. Brown found his groove on the back nine, making three birdies on the closing stretch. Shields made two front nine birdies during the round.
Sam Lewis and Joshua Partridge rounded out the top five in the division with rounds of 80 in a tie for fourth place.
Division 3 – Grady Overholt was the class of the field in Division 3 on Sunday, firing a round of 81 to clear the field by three strokes. Overholt played his best golf on the front nine, birding the par-three seventh hole to shoot just three-over par, 39.
Clay Marsh and Cody Markovich tied for second place with rounds of 84. Marsh made two birdies on the round, including one on the par-three 15th hole. Markovich’s round was highlighted by a birdie on the par-four fourth hole.
Jeffrey Johnson and John Pearson shot 89 to finish in a tie for fourth place, rounding out the top five in the division.
Division 4 – Bobby Wortham’s two birdies during his round proved to be the difference in his two-stroke victory as he posted a round of 85 to win Division 4.
Ernie Rowland shot 87 to finish second. Rowland’s round included seven pars on the day, including three in his first five holes of the back nine. George Bright and Billy Trull finished tied for third place with rounds of 90. Bright’s round started in style with a birdie on the par-five opening hole. Trull made his lone birdie of the day on the par-three seventh hole.
Chris DeWitt and Russell Loyd Sr. finished tied for fifth place with rounds of 91. DeWitt took advantage of the par-four 11th hole, making birdie as Loyd finished his round with four pars.
Division 5 – Rodney Ferrell’s round of 94 proved to be more than enough to claim the top spot in Division 5. Ferrell made two birdies on his round, including one on the par-four 14th hole as he cleared the field by three strokes.
Bill Turner finished second with a round of 97, which included three birdies in his first six holes of the back nine. Dick Jenkins finished third with a round of 98. Tim Kunkel and Jan Gamlin rounded out the top five in the division in a tie for fourth place with rounds of 99.
Mid-Am (Net) – Carlos Santana made it a clean sweep of the weekend as his round of net 70 was enough to win the Mid-Am Net division. Santana made four net birdies and a net eagle on the round, as he played the front nine in two under par.
Weston Brown finished second with a net round of 72, even par. Brown led the division with five net birdies and a net eagle as he shot one under par on the back nine.
Grady Overholt finished third with a net round of 73, including two net birdies on the front nine to shoot one under par, 35. Bill Russell and Jamie Perez rounded out the top five in the division in a tie for fourth place with net rounds of 74.
Senior (Net) – While Cody Marsh fell just short of the Division 3 title, his net round of 72 was enough to win the Senior Net division on Sunday. Marsh played his best golf on the back nine, making eight pars and a net birdie to shoot one under par on the closing stretch.
Randy Lamb and Rodney Ferrell finished in a tie for second place with net rounds of 74. Ferrell made three net birdies and three net eagles as Lamb made two net birdies and a net eagle.
Ernie Rowland finished fourth with a net round of 76, followed by Jeffrey Johnson, John Pearson and Scott Bryant in a tie for fifth place with net rounds of 77.
