An encouraged field of 18 was on hand for the fifth event of the season on the Northern California Chapter of the Amateur Players Tour. Players were met with mild temperatures, a gradually increasing breeze and an enjoyable golf course.
In Division 1, Trysten Ewolhin out of San Jose was our champion on the day with a 76 +4. Trysten was awarded a $150 gift card and black crystal trophy! Trysten shot 41 on the front and trailed early leader Larry Burns by two. Trysten made back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18 to card an even par 35 and claim the two-shot victory over Larry who carded a 78+6 composed of matching 39s.
In Division 2, Arshad Khan of San Ramon was our champion on the day with a 78 +6. Arshad was awarded a $75 gift card and black crystal trophy! Similar to our Division 1 champion, the Division 2 champion had to overcome an early deficit. New member Chang Young Kim played a solid front nine while carding a 39 and opened a two-shot lead, but it was Arshad’s steady play and back nine 37 that would be enough to claim the victory.
In Division 3, Jason Welch was our champion on the day with an 82 +10. Jason was awarded a $100 gift card and black crystal trophy. Jason shot an opening nine of 41 which was good for a two-shot lead over AJ Quintero. The back nine would be a battle as Patrick Rebholtz would climb into the mix after making three pars and a bogie to open the closing nine and tie Jason after the 13th at +8. Things would get interesting after both Jason and Patrick took doubles on the 15th while AJ made a par leading to a tense 16th tee box. Stepping on to the 16th tee, both Jason and Patrick stood at +10 while AJ was one back at +11. All three players made bogie on the 16th and moved to the 17th where the deciding event would take place. Both AJ & Patrick made bogies, while Jason would make a crucial birdie to take a two-shot lead to the 18th. Jason would make par on the final hole to conclude his round with the win.
In Division 4, Don Harris continues his winning ways with a five-shot victory after his round of 85 +13. Don was awarded a $75 gift card and black crystal trophy. Don shot a solid 44 on the front and matched it with an even better 41 to complete the victory. This is Don’s third victory of the year.
In Division 5, Felix Monjes was our champion with a 93 +21. Felix was awarded a $50 gift card and black crystal trophy! Felix battled with fellow Division 5 ironman John Spradling. John led by three after an opening nine of 47. After a par on the 14th Felix closed to within one only to give back two shots after a triple on the 15th. This is where he displayed a solid closing performance making pars on 16 and 17 and finishing 18 with a bogie to complete the victory. It was an enjoyable day playing with these two as the competition was friendly but fierce. Both of these players have made every event so far this year and based on registrations, will continue the streak through at least the Old Greenwood / Toiyabe event.
