Heartbreaker to Backbreaker Golf Results

The Amateur Players Tour- Birmingham hosted 47 golfers from four different Chapters; Atlanta, Augusta, Birmingham, and Smokey Mountain on Sunday June 27th, 2021, at Robert Trent Jones Silver Lakes in Glencoe AL. The Heartbreaker to Backbreaker offered up wonderful course conditions and minus the 30-minute weather day for lighting, the weather was next to perfect. Players competed in five divisions for the right to be crowned champion.  The Birmingham Chapter doubled the prize pool for this one-day event. The total purse for this event was over $1800.

In division 1, we had two players run away from the field. Conway Shirey of Lineville, AL posted a one-under par round of 71, to take the title. This was Conway’s first victory on the Amateur Players Tour. Conway’s round included four birdies to three bogeys on the par 5s. Assistant Director, Derek Nicholson, continued his solid summer of golf with a two over par round of 74. A double bogey on the par 3, fifth hole was to much for Derek to overcome.

Division 2 was won by Tim Miller of Millington, TN with a four over par round of 76. Tim birdied holes six and seven to get to one under par on his round, enroute to securing his first victory on the Amateur Players Tour. Bart Pettus of Chelsea, AL was six shots behind Tim heading into the back nine, but a back nine score of 37 was good enough to secure a second-place finish with a 79. James Davis, of Roswell, GA, finished in third place with a score of 81.

Division 3 was also won by another first-time winner on the Amateur Players Tour. Tyler Slaten, of Hoover, AL, showed up in a big way on the front nine by posting an event low of 35 for the front nine. The back nine was not so friendly to Tyler, however he kept it together to bring the victory home with an 80. Second place was claimed by Mark Young, from Dunwoody, GA shooting an 82.  Chris Woodham, from Birmingham, AL, and Landon Bertarelli, from Wetumpka, AL both tied for 3rd place both posting 85.

Division 4 decided that 18 holes was not enough golf to declare a winner.  Danny Daniel, of Pike Road, AL and Mark Rigby, of Cusseta, AL, both posted rounds of 87 to force a sudden death playoff. The playoff was won by Danny Daniel with a six on the first playoff hole, a par 5. Kenneth Hancock, of Birmingham, AL, double bogeyed the par 5, hole #18 to miss the playoff.

Division 5 was close most of the day with ultimately Tim Harbin, of Jasper, AL, declared the champion, shooting 95. He became the winner after it was brought to the tournament committee that a rule had been broken during the round on multiple occasions. To protect the field and the integrity of the game that the Amateur Players Tour upholds, there was a disqualification which gave Tim the win and moved Bobby Arrighi, of Montgomery, AL and Terry Hodge of Trussville, AL in a tie for second place.
