West Virginia’s Ohio Open Results

Leading up the 1st fall event and kick-off of the 2022 West Virginia season, we had temperatures in the 60’s and 70’s all week. Sun was out, perfect golf weather. Then Mother Nature decided that she was done teasing everyone and decided to show her nasty self. When the tournament began, it was just windy with temperatures in the low 40’s. Once the field hit the back 9, it started to rain. Then it began to sleet. With about 4 holes left, it started to snow. But everyone battled through the elements and was able to complete the tournament in slightly under 5 hours.  

Division 1: A head to head battle took place between Columbus’ Brian Polick and West Virginia’s Trevor Foy. D1 played from the tips all day, which made birdies hard to come by in the weather, with neither player able to break par. Brian was able to make 7 straight pars, with only 2 bogey’s on the back 9, which was good enough to claim a 5 stroke victory over Trevor who will be moving and joining the Dallas/Fort Worth tour at the start of the new year. We wish Trevor the best of luck in his move and continued success in Division 1. Congratulations Brian on your victory. 

Division 2: 3 players took the course in D2 this week and battled back and forth on the front 9. The weather and course took its toll and it became a 2 player race down the stretch between former Kentucky player Tyler Hetzer and 2022 tour newcomer and West Virginia member Lindy Sullivan. 18 holes was not enough to decide a champion. Neither was 19 holes. It took 20 holes of golf before Tyler was able to defeat Lindy and capture his 1st win of the 2022 season.  

Division 3: Columbus member Mike Bruesch made the trip down to play against West Virginia guest John Cook head to head. The course and weather conditions were tough and fierce and John struggled a little bit, especially on the back 9, but continued to battle throughout and put up a good fight. Mike shot a +12 to take the victory and capture the Ohio open to represent his home state. Congratulations Mike.  

Division 4: The most players in the field was in Division 4 today with par 3 master Marshall Kiser taking the victory by 3 shot over defending D4 champion Justin Keaton. Marshall paced the field for the most of the day, as Marshall, Justin, and Matt McGee were all paired together. All 3 were tied at a few points throughout the round, but no one was able to unseat Marshall from the top spot. John Sherman from Ohio was also up there battling throughout the day in the group ahead of Marshall. John wasn’t able to unseat Marshall either and came home 3rd.  

Division 5: Patrick McNeely won D5 unopposed. Patrick played in the Marshall, Justin, and Matt pairing. Patrick played right there with Marshall most of the day and was in the hunt with the D4 guys before hitting a rough patch on the back 9. This was Patrick’s 1st win of the 2022 season and gives him a good jump on the rest of D5 where he was the runner-up a year ago in the points race.
