The APT Low Country Chapter held the 2nd Tournament of the 2021 – 2022 wrap around season at the newly renovated Wyboo Golf Club in manning SC near Lake Marion in the heart of the Low Country SC. This Tournament was SOLD OUT making for a FULL FIELD of Healthy Competition and Rewards for the Players that joined us.
The course was in fantastic shape with some of the best greens anywhere. The weather was chamber of commerce good with temps in the high 70’s and once the fog burned off beautiful blue skies. It was perfect weather for December Golf in the south.
Division 1 saw the APT National Chapter Owner Matt Minder get off to an incredible start. With a string of pars and a birdie on the front nine, he went out in 35 and held a commanding lead on fellow competitors Jay Combs (Carolina Triad Chapter Owner) and Lee Dixon (Low Country Charleston Chapter Owner) who both went out in 40. The back nine was a different story….. Travis Powell from the Carolina Coast Chapter shot a 45 going out, but decided to make a run on the back. He turned the game around, shooting 33 on the back nine to close to within 4 of the lead. Matt slipped a little but held on for a solid 4 shot lead and a nice 74 round. Lee finished in 3rd and Jay in 4th.
Great job Matt Minder!!
Division 2 had a strong field with 6 solid players battling it out for the win. Kevin Lyles and Jim Starrett, (Rivertowne winner from Nov. 20) both played a solid front nine. Kevin came in at 1 under 35 and Jim in at even par 36. The back nine was a battle for both as they fought for the win. Jim finished his round and posted 76 and held the clubhouse lead. Kevin started the back bogey then birdie and then bogeyed 4 of the last 7. It ended up being a fight to the finish and Kevin held on for the WIN!!! An overall great round of 75. Jim finished in solo 2nd with a solid 76. Chris Patterson and Randy Hamilton tied for 3rd both shooting 79.
Great job Kevin Lyles!!
Division 3 saw another great round carded by a new member of the APT Low Country tour. Charles Getsinger for the second tournament in a row started with a birdie on #1, shot 30 going out and 39 coming in for a strong round of 78. I believe he might have been thinking you can’t win them all if you don’t win the first two 😊. Andrew Haines from Charlotte kept pace on the front nine and kept things close going out in 39 also. An unfortunate Triple Bogey 8 on #11 created some separation between 1st and 2nd. That tough hole led to a string of bad holes that put Charles solidly in the lead and Andrew finishing Solo 2nd. TJ Eaves from Southern Pines and Joseph Jones from Columbia finished up tied for 3rd.
Great job Charles Getsinger – 2 in a ROW!!
Division 4 winner was Jimmy Mathis from Columbia. He got off to a rough start with bogey and then double on 1 and 2, but found his game on the tough #1 Handicap hole #3 making birdie. He went out in 41 and came in with 41 to shoot 82 and put up the win. Tim Driggers from Irmo finished in solo 2nd. He made a charge on the back nine but Jimmy was too far ahead and played well also on the back to hold off the challenge! New Member Charlie Cook and Chris Huge from Lee Dixon’s neighborhood Mt. Pleasant finished tied for 3rd.
Great job Jimmy Mathis!!
Division 5 was a battle between 2 competitors who played a couple of great rounds. Ricky Compton from VA got off to a rough start but had a solid middle and held on in the end to shoot a nice 85. Johnny Greider from Gaston SC was out looking for his first win. He got off to a tough start but found his game on the back nine, shot a 39, overall 85 and tied the lead. Both Ricky and Johnny had packed up before realizing they were in a playoff. Both loaded back up and headed out to #10 for an on the course playoff. Ricky hit his drive in the middle of the fairway. Johnny got an unlucky break ending up with a terrible stance just outside the bunker on the left side of the fairway. That tough shot led to a double bogey 6 (after he had made birdie during his round earlier in the day) and Ricky played the hole strong making an easy 2 putt bogey to bring home the win. This one was fun to watch…… Congrats to Johnny and Ricky for their great play and Congrats to Ricky for the win!
Great job Ricky Comption!!
