At Denison Golf Club we had 34 golfers come to play in our 13th event of the year. We played in hot and humid conditions on a tremendous Donald Ross layout that tested the whole field especially on the typical Ross sloped greens.
In Division 1 John Burke was the lone participant but still put up an impressive even par 71 with 4 birdies to go along with 4 bogeys. John shot an even 35,36 on both sides and posted the low score of the tournament.
In Division 2 Steve Phillips continued his winning ways from earlier in the year in D3 by shooting a 76 for a 5-shot victory. Steve came out strong birdieing the first hole and then finished the front nine in 39. After the pars on 8 and 9 Steve rattled off another 8 more pars on the back before the bogey on 18 to shoot 37 on the back. This was Steve’s first win in Division 2. Brent Wallace had steady 39,42 for 81 and 2nd in his first APT tournament.
In Division 3 18 holes was not enough for 2 players who found their way into a tie. Tyler Shaw and Jake Favret both shot 82 and went into a sudden death playoff. On the first playoff hole Tyler made a great par while Jake made bogey. Tyler started very strong with 38 on the front nine highlighted by birdies on 1 and 8. Tyler stumbled a little coming home but was able to hang on for 82 and the playoff victory. This was Tyler’s 1st victory of the year. Jake Favret also started strong with 39 on the front but like many others had a more difficult time with the back coming in with 43 for 82. Jake did make an impressive par on 17 and 18 to force the playoff. Curtis Knapp finished 1 shot out of the playoff with 83 for 3rd.
In Division 4 Chris Berry played very solid throughout the day. After a misstep on 9 for triple Chris posted 43 on the front and played extremely solid on the back with 6 bogeys and 3 pars to come home in 42 for 85. Chris posted the great score and then waited an hour or two for his fellow competitors to slowly back up to him. Rick Gordon who went out in 45 would finish strong on the back with 41 for 86 and 2nd place. Mitchell Van Hoose and Zach Walker who were around the lead all day both shot 87 for the tie for 3rd place.
In Division 5 Brandon Turner who has been around the lead all year long captured another victory. Brandon went out in 47 and then played mostly bogey golf on the back keeping himself around the lead. Playing 17 Brandon was 1 back before hitting his approach on the par 3 to 2 feet to not only make birdie but also take away a skin and Closest to the pin. After the birdie Brandon gave himself a cushion which he used and posted the 92 for a 1 shot-victory. Doc Sherman who has also been around the lead most of the year would shoot 45,48 for 93 and 2nd place. Terry Collins shot 94 (48,46) for 3rd place.
In the Senior Net optional side game Mike Rafferty and Curtis Knapp both posted a net 74. After the USGA tie breaker (back 9 score) Mike would win with a 36 on the back to Curtis’ 38. Jerry Lanfear and Rick Gordon had a net 75 for 3rd.
