The sun shined brightly over the valley as golfers from multiple tours and states converged to play for their respective flights to see who would come out on top and raise the trophy.
Dexter Moore returned to competitive golf after an 8 month layoff at Draper Valley, after last playing for the north American championship last season at Pinehurst. Dexter showed no signs of rust early, but struggled on the par 3’s. Dexter however battled until the end against Jerod Ewing in a head to head matchup for Division 1. Jerod used 4 birdies on the day to capture his 4th straight victory and 6th overall of the season.
Shane Hawks from the Carolina Triad tour made his season debut at Draper Valley for Division 2. Shane was unable to get in rhythm on the course and struggled on the tight back 9. JT Bradley played relatively mistake free and closed out the front 9 with a birdie, as he cruised to his first career victory on tour.
In the best battle of the day, 4 players showed potential to capture the championship and played close as the front 9 came to an end. Tennessee East player Mitch Ellison led early, thanks to 2 birdies on the front, but once again the treacherous back 9 took it’s toll on Mitch and knocked him front contention. This left Dave Shepperd, Matt Robinson, and Tink Brown left to battle on the back. Dave played smooth on the front, but a double bogey instead of an ace (that we thought he had) on 16, took Dave out of the running, while it was a double on 14 that took Matt out of it. This left Tink Brown to capture his first career victory on tour. Tink doubled the 10th, and took a bogey on 11, but regained his composure and was able to not fall victim to the struggles the back 9 had shown so many before him.
In another competitive battle, 4 players fought neck and neck on the front 9, as James Chambers took the lead heading to the back 9 by 1 over Tyler Ellison, 2 over Justin Keaton, and 3 over Matt McGee. The back 9 curse hit James Chambers at #10 as a triple, derailed what was otherwise a great round. McGee played smart golf, but an unfortunate double on 15 knocked him from contention. This turned it to a 2 man race as Justin Keaton would battle Tyler Ellison for the victory. A birdie on 10 by Justin, and back to back doubles on 15 and 16 by Tyler, was enough to give Justin his 6th victory of the season.
Jason Hancock has been playing very well this season as he’s been consistently at the top of the leaderboard in the events he’s played in. Garry Moore was making his 2nd ever start on tour, and looking to close out his first victory, after coming up just short in his first event a month earlier. Jason led early, but he was not immune to the back 9 curse, as he faltered, while Garry played mistake free on the back, capturing his first career championship.
Thanks to everyone who played and congrats to our 3 first time winners! Thanks to the team at Draper Valley for hosting us and having the course in great shape. We look forward to returning next season.
Enjoy the week off, and we’ll see everyone at the Arnold Palmer designed golf course at Stonewall Resort Sunday August 7th.
