The Amateur Players Tour-Upstate Chapter hosted its first event. Players from four different chapters competed in a Net Quota and optional skins game. This non-points event allowed players to knock some rust off their games and have fun before the season kicks off in a couple of weeks.
Links O’Tryon provided the setting for the players. While wet from overnight rains, there was some bounce and roll later in the afternoon as the course dried.
The competition took some time to unfold with minimal movement on the leaderboard. Danny Sullivan (D4), Ronnie Strange and Jimmy Sullivan appeared to be running away with the lead. Quota games have a funny way of providing exciting finishes by the end of the day.
Brian Gregor, Alex Franklin, Darrell Arledge, Tommy Boyter, Ric Oyervides and Jim Goulding all flipped the leaderboard with timely pars and birdies, anything to get a point on the board.
Paying the top 8 players, we had to go to the scorecard to break ties and determine finishing order. Three players exceeded their quota by 6 points. Finishing just outside the money, in 9th place, was Jimmy Sullivan. Eighth place went to Alex Franklin (our youngest competitor in the field and beating his father Chris by a point). Seventh went to Ric Oyervides.
We had a 5 way tie for second, again going to the scorecard, Tommy Boyter took sixth. Darrell Arledge took fifth. Danny Sullivan took fourth. Ronnie Strange took third. Brian Gregor, with a birdie on 18 while wearing his “Sunday Tiger Red,” took second.
Jim Goudling played a solid round of golf all day, exceeding his quota by nine points. Posting points on every hole, which is key in a quota game. Shoots 73 on the day to take the win.
