Marsh Wheeling Memorial Tournament Results

If Darlington Raceway is the track too tough to tame, Wheeling Country Club could be considered the course too tough to tame. Long ball hitters are penalized for their power here, while players good with long irons can find success here if they play their shots short of the hole and let them run up.  

A day earlier, Moundsville member Frank Hewitt found success and captured his first D1 victory over guest player Todd Antill. These two went head to head today at Wheeling, with Todd looking to redeem himself from the day before. Frank had 2 birdies on the round, but it was his quadruple bogey on the par 4 8th that would hand Todd his first career victory on tour by 1 shot over Frank and bragging rights. Congratulations to Todd and thanks for playing as a guest this weekend. We look forward to you joining the tour as a full time member next season.  

After coming up just short a day earlier in D2, Tyler Hughes was looking to redeem himself, but he would have to go through guest player Eric West making his tour debut. Tyler birdied the 1st hole and fired a +1 over 36 on the front, as he would not be denied his first victory since May as he defeated Eric by 13 strokes.  

Tink Brown is looking to gain points towards the D3 championship, and he brought his hot streak to Wheeling to gain on Michael Heitz. Tink led most of the day, thanks to 2 birdies on the front 9. However, Justin Keaton went out first and set the clubhouse number at 82. Over the last 4 holes, Justin shot +3, while Tink shot a +4. That single stroke from hole 15 was enough to give Justin his first career D3 victory and making him a winner in 3 separate APT divisions in his career.  

After struggling the day before, D4 points leader Tyler Ellison was looking to redeem himself at Wheeling Country Club. Tyler was able to fend off challenges throughout his round, but sitting with the clubhouse lead was yesterday’s runner-up Casey Orndorff. Tyler however came to the 18th, with a 4 shot lead, giving himself the guaranteed win, which was fortunate for him, since he took a triple on 18, giving himself the 1 shot victory.  

Finishing off their head to head weekend, Ron Snow would take D5 points leader Jason Hancock to the brink. Jason is a long ball hitter, and Wheeling Country Club is not kind to such players Jason struggled off the tee all day and even put his driver up for a few holes, but continued to struggle off the tee. Ron was consistent off the tee, but again, it was his 2nd shot that would end up being his demise. Jason took a triple on the final hole, while Ron needed a par to force the playoff. Ron however took a double on the final hole as Jason extended his points lead. 

Congrats to our champions and thanks to everyone who came out to play. Thanks to Wheeling Country Club for hosting us and having forgiving pin placements. This tournament was rescheduled from earlier in the season when mother nature flooded the course, so it was nice of her to apologize to us with sunny skies and a decent little breeze today. 

Next event is September 11th at the Donald Ross designed Portsmouth Elks Country Club. Registration deadline is Friday September 9th at 10:24 AM. This is the last event of the 2022 regular season, before the Tour Championship at Cobb.
