On Saturday, the Nashville chapter of the Amateur Players Tour visited Ted Rhodes Golf Course in Nashville, TN. After two rainouts of the event earlier in the season, we were treated with no rain and plenty of heat and sunshine. We are very thankful to finally get this event in-the-books!
In Division 1, it was a tale of two nines for two competitors. After nine holes, Tim Saunders from the Smoky Mountain chapter was even par and held a one-stroke lead over Ryan Overstreet and Andrew Neely. Lurking two-strokes behind was Dakota Woodcock. As the competitors made their way around the back nine, the battle began to take shape. Earnest Rickey, after starting is first 4 holes in 3-over par, finished his last 14 holes in 4-under par, with birdies on 3 of his last 5 holes, to finish his round at 1-under par, 71. Woodcock posted a 1-under back nine, to finish at 1-over par, 73. Saunders, also posted a 1-under back nine, but an untimely bogey on the 18th to finish at 1-under par for the round (71) which forced him in to a playoff with Rickey. The playoff lasted one hole with Rickey scoring the win with a par.
In Division 2, another playoff was needed to determine a champion. Four players dueled for the lead all round. National Chapter owner, Jody Barrett, posted two nines of 3-over par to finish 6-over par (78). Tim Ehret, who also finished at 6-over par 78, posted and even-par back nine to best Barrett for the 3rd place gift card. John Hipp started his round a bit shaky, but posted 3 birdies on his outward nine to take an early lead. His 3-over par back nine got him in-the-house with a 5-over par 77. Harrison Loyd (41-36-77) posted a 1-under par back nine to make up for his front nine play to finish in a tie with Hipp at the end of the round. On the first playoff hole, Hipp and Loyd tied with bogeys. Loyd was able to birdie the second playoff hole to secure victory.
In Division 3, Paul McGee ran away with the win by 4 strokes over 3 other competitors. McGee played brilliantly with birdies on the par 5 1st and 10th en route to a 5-over par 77. Anthony Todd, Kevin Smith and Eric Banas all finished at 9-over 81 to finish in a tie for 2nd. Banas, with an inward nine of 39, bested Smith and Todd for the 2nd place gift card.
In Division 4, the winner was decided on the back nine, going all the way to final hole. Birmingham Chapter’s Danny Daniel and Houston Chapter’s Robert Scarpati were back-and-forth on front nine, with Daniel taking a one-stroke lead to the back. Through 13 holes, Daniel extended his lead to six strokes over Scarpati with a string of 4 straight pars. Scarpati battled back and was able to finish off his round with a 12-over par 84 to take the win by one stroke. Daniel found the bogey train over his last five holes and fell out of 1st place into a tie for second place with Larry Sumner. Sumner, who shot consistent nines of 42 and 43, respectively, took the 2nd place gift card.
In Division 5, the front nine was tight between Jana Hudson, David McDow and Andy Morris with Morris holding a one-stroke lead at the turn. As with most of the contests today, the back nine proved to be pivotal. In the end, Hudson continues her winning ways with a nine-stroke victory!
