North Carolina’s Deer Brook/Edgewater Results

Welcome to weekend golf on the Amateur Players Tour–Charlotte Chapter!

With a healthy dose of Monday events, members welcomed the weekend rounds. What better way to start than with a two-day event. Members from seven different chapters came together to compete, test their skills, and enjoy the camaraderie of the APT Charlotte|Upstate Chapter presents.

With beautiful weather, the players enjoyed two of the area's best public courses, Deer Brook and Edgewater.

Deer Brook Day 1 - Recap

Day one players put themselves in position for the opportunity to gain valuable Player of the Year points along with the accomplishment of a two-day victory.

Deer Brook Golf Course hosted round one of this two-day event. While forgiving fairways off the tee, well except for hole 10 which is about as wide as a 2x4, the defense of the course are the green complexes.

Division 5 saw three players on day separate themselves from the pack on day. Keith Gibson (47-51-98) and settled into third position after his round. Newcomer Eugene Willis (50-46-96) was able to get on track during his back nine. Although Keith stumbled on 17 and 18, he found himself in after the dust settled. A familiar name found himself atop the leaderboard again after a stellar opening six holes at two over par. Jace Calhoun (45-47-92) was challenged by the course as his driver decided not to cooperate although he did find himself atop the leaderboard.

Division 4 was packed after the first round with nine players within five shots of the lead. Vic Lawrence (41-48-89), Brian Gregor (40-49-89) and Mark Langford (44-45-89) found themselves in position tied for second and two shots back of the leader. Larry Lee (43-44-87), from the Hilton Head Chapter, found himself atop the leaderboard with his consistent play.

Division 3 was another exciting leaderboard with four players separated by four shots after the round. Tyler Phillips (38-48-86) was in position to make a Sunday charge. Brad Greene (42-43-85) sat three back and positioned himself nicely in third place. Kirk Tatge (39-43-82) and Tony Koechli (41-41-82) found themselves tied and would sleep on the lead heading into day two.

Division 2 found five players shooting in the 70’s to put themselves in position for the title this weekend. Johnny Moffet (36-43-79) and Scott Dixon (40-39-79) tied for fourth after round one. Mike Elliott (38-39-77) played with envious consistency to put himself in solo third. Travis Powell (34-42-76), playing out of the Myrtle Beach Chapter, and Charlotte's Mark Ballew (41-35-76) found themselves tied atop the leaderboard.

Division 1 saw three players establish themselves as the pace setters this weekend. Scott Roberts (38-36-74) found himself in third, putting on another ball striking clinic as he adjusts to a new green reading routine. Wally Love (35-36-71) found himself in second place as he continues to establish himself as a player to watch this season. Daniel Jackson (35-34-69) continues to play impressive golf. As the only player to shoot in 60’s, Daniel would head into day two with a two-shot lead atop the leaderboard.

Edgewater Day 2 – Recap

Players would be faced with new challenges on day two. Edgewater Golf Club played host for round two. This tree lined course asks players to hit fairways from the tee and make wise decisions during the round.

Division 5 players needed the overnight leader to stumble earlier to have a chance to capture the title. Kip Moore (99-92-191), playing out of the Atlanta Chapter, improved upon his day one score and moved into second place. The weekend belonged to Jace Calhoun (92-85-177) as he came into day two with a plan to force his competitors to come and catch him. Jace, just 13 years of age, was able to stick to his conservative game plan and cruise to victory. We do see new challenges on the horizon for Jace.

Division 4 would see tour veterans emerge from the pack. Vic Lawrence (89-82-171) would get off to a slow start but managed to right the ship on the back nine. Ultimately, Vic would settle for third at the end of the day. Walter White (90-80-170) had the hot round of the day and would make a charge for the title. Walter would come up a shot short of forcing a playoff to take second. Larry Lee (87-82-169) felt the pressure on the inward nine. Taking advantage of the short par five 17th hole, Larry would make an easy birdie to provide the one-shot advantage he needed to secure the victory.

Division 3 saw the overnight leaders push each other all day. Kirk Tatge (82-85-167) fell behind early but never backed off his pursuit of the victory. When the dust settled, Kirk would have to settle for second, three shots behind the leader. Tony Koechli (82-82-164) played with the consistency needed to win these two events. Once Tony grabbed the lead, he never looked back as he managed his way around the course.

Division 2, by the end of the day, had a contest for second. Scott Dixon (79-79-158) showed his golf savvy with consistent play to settle for third. Mark Ballew (76-81-157), while not having his best game, was able to navigate the course well enough for second place. The day belonged to Travis Powell (76-74-150). Travis set the tone early, playing the front nine at +1 and matching the score on the inward nine, to cruise to an easy win.

Division 1 saw Scott Roberts (74-71-145) make up ground through the front nine as he went out at -1. Scott stayed patient on the inward nine grabbing a bird on 14 to tie for the lead. He would see his chances dwindle as he gave the shot back on 16 and finished in second place. Daniel Jackson (69-73-142) had his eyes set on two goals this weekend, the victory and closing the points gap in the local player of the year race. Shooting level par on the outward nine, Daniel had to think he had secured his goals for the weekend. With bogies on 10, 12 and 15, Daniel would need to refocus in a hurry. With a renewed focus, Daniel pars 16 and goes birdie-birdie to capture the victory and those valuable points.

Thank you to our tour veterans for welcoming our new members, some of whom are also new to competitive golf. We all still remember how nerve racking entering competitive golf for the first time can be and the assistance from our members is always appreciated.
