Pacific Classic Golf Tournament at PGA West Results

PGA West’s Nicklaus Tournament & Pete Dye Stadium courses were the host sites  courses for the Pacific Classic over Memorial Day weekend in La Quinta, CA. Typical of Jack Nicklaus’s designed courses the day one course played difficult, and the scores showed it. The stadium course allowed for wide variance of scoring opportunities which showed in the leaderboard changing hands after exciting eagles and birdies as well as the dreaded double and triple bogeys.

Division 1 
After day one on the Nicklaus Tournament course, three players separated themselves from the pack. John Fiore (Phoenix Chapter) & Adam Sides (SoCal Chapteruthern California) carded 81s while Andrew Yeh (Las Vegas Chapter) rounded out the top three with an 82. Jonathan Siegfried (Southern CaliforniaCal Chapter) was in good spirits after falling from first to fifth after joking about doing something he had never done before, makingcarding a 10 on the difficult closing 18th hole. We have all been there in some form or fashion, and we appreciate Jonathan’s positive outlook when stating that it was frustrating, but he could still win on Sunday! 
Day two sawwould see Jonathan tee-off an hour earlier than the closing three and he set the pace for the leaders after solid play on the opening nine with a solid 37. Jonathan  and completeding the second round with a back nine with a 38 that totaled a tournament low 75. The opening nine for the leaders saw separation would see separation with as Adam and John openeding up a four-shot lead after carding 38s on the opening nine. T Andrew would fall back after a disappointing double on the reachable par 5 8th. The early part of the back nine would see Adam took ake control of the event with pars on 10 & 11 after John got into to trouble and left those holes four over after a triple bogey and bogey. In an increasing breeze, Adam would complete the final seven holes three over, carding a 77 which would be good enough for a three-shot victory over Jonathan and his day two charge. We congratulate Adam for his first win with the Amateur Players Tour, Adam took home a $375 Visa Gift Card and the Desert Sand vaseTrophy.

Division 2 
Grant Sigesmund (Southern CaliforniaCal Chapter) jumped out to a four-shot lead with his day one medalist 77 on the Nicklaus Tournament Course. Defending champion Jeff Clifford (Rocky Mountain) shot a very solid 81. Twon Fullman (Southern CaliforniaoCal Chapter) & Shawn Larson (Rocky Mountain) rounded out the top four each posting 84s. Day two at the Stadium Course, Grant would keep on rolling on the front nine with a solid 37. Jeff keptwas keeping pace until a double bogey on the challenging 9th hole leftwould leave him seven back.  The winds would kick up on the back nine and both players would make it home in similar fashion settling on a final margin of six. We congratulate Grant for his first win with the Amateur Players Tour. Grant took home a $375 Visa Gift Card and the Desert Sand vaseTrophy. Jeff took home $100 Visa Gift Card for his second-place finish.

Division 3 
After day one on the Nicklaus Tournament course, eight players would find themselves within seven shots of the lead. The pack was led by Logan Calvin (Southern CaliforniaCal Chapter), Felix Monjes (Northern CaliforniaNorth Cal Chapter) and AJ Quintero (Northern CaliforniaNorth Cal Chapter) who all carded 84s on the challenging layout. Rounding out the top four was John Dwyer III (Southern CaliforniaSoCal Chapter) who was one shot behind with a solid 85. During four- day events, the third round is called moving day and the same could be said of the opening nine on day two of a 36-hole event. This proved to be true for Division 3 as players would slide and rise on the leaderboard after the opening nine. We sawwould see John Dwyer III, Felix Monjes and AJ Quintero, three of day one leaders struggle early and fall behind Logan Calvin and his opening nine 45. Even with their struggles John and Felix kept the pressure on stayinged within three and AJ was not out of it finding himself four back.  
Even with LWhile Logan’s closest pursuers struggleding early, others would fill the void would replace them as Steven Archuleta (Northern California) and his opening nine 43 got would get to within one and , while Dillion Patterson (Rocky Mountain Chapter)) cardedwould card a 42 that found him two backand be only two back. After Logan, Steven and Dillon traded pars and bogeys between them, the three would be all were all tied up after the 13th hole. Playing in the early group, Steven would make par on the 14th, while Dillon would make a bridie to take the lead by one. Logan, who was in the final group, made would make a bogey and fellto fall two behind. After aAll three made bogeys on the 15th, they would move toand moved on to  the 16th, where Steven would madecard a bogey and Dillon a double-bogey. Logan capitalized and made awould capitalize by making a solid par that and tiedying things up again as again as thethe players headed to the 17th..  Both Steven and Dillon would make pmade pars while Logan had  amade bogey to fall one back. Dillon would hit the 18th green in regulation, and while Steven would find himself just off the green in three.  Steven’s knew he need to make the chip, but  his chip did not would not fall leaving , leaving Dillon a two putt for the clubhouse lead. Dillon did would do even better than a two putt and would rolled in his birdie attempt, clinching the win in exciting fashion as Logan’s tee shot in the final group shot unfortunately found the penalty area. This is Dillon’s second straight Pacific Classic win as he won in similar exciting fashion last year. Dillon was awarded a $600 Visa Gift Card and the Desert Sand vaseTrophy, Steven finished second and was awarded a $300 Visa Gift Card and Logan would finish 3rd and take home a $100 gift card.

Division 4 
A field of twelve created a tasty prize pool of $750 in Division 4, and five separated themselves from the pack on the Nicklaus Tournament course. Leading the way with a 91 was SoCal D4 standout Milton Gray, followed closely by Salvador Montalvo Jr (Southern Californiauthern California) at 92, Jim Craig (Houston) and Mike Baker (Southern California) at 93, and Jeremy Conetah (Rocky Mountain) with a 94. Mike started  would start day two off with a bang with a birdie on the first hole (which would hold up for a Super Skin!) to briefly jump into the lead as others found trouble on the tricky hole. The pack separated quickly as Jim shook off his opening double bogey to turn in 39, good for a three- shot lead over Montalvo. It stretched to five before Salvador chipped in for (another Super Skin!) EAGLE on the legendary #16 on Stadium (named San Andreas Fault) to trim the margin back to three. It was two heading up 18, where Salvador had a putt to tie that did not drop, leaving Jim Craig with the Desert Sand trophy and a $525 Visa Gift Card. Salvador took home $225 for his second- place finish.

Division 5 
Just four went to post in Division 5, but that didn’t mean there wasn’t high drama as all four (from different chapters!) completed day one in the windy conditions on the Nicklaus Tournament course within two strokes of each other, setting up a final round showdown. Jerry Anderson (Virginia Capitol) clung to a one- shot lead over Dennis Mc Zeal (Southern California) and two over Mike Eames (Rocky Mountain) and+ Robert Rosenbaum (Kansas City). Dennis would nudge in a tie after 27 holes with Jerry, but Jerry’s fine final nine of 45 on the legendary Stadium Course was good enough for a five- shot victory in the end. He took home the Desert Sand trophy and a $250 Visa Gift Card back to Virginia Beach!
