TPC Piper Glen Golf Tournament Results

The much anticipated TPC Piper Glen Country Club played host to the Amateur Players Tour - Charlotte Chapter on Monday August 16th.

TPC Piper Glen has gone under extensive renovations in the past few years. New greens installed, upgraded bunkers, additional tee boxes added, just name a few of the enhancements. The course is in immaculate condition

With tropical storm Fred looming near the panhandle of Florida and multiple days of negotiations between APT-Charlotte and TPC Piper Glen we settled on playing the event. Based on available information, it did appear there would be a window to complete the event. Unfortunately, that did not occur as the event was cut short by weather.

Division 5  played 9 common holes for the contest. Paying two spots, getting off to a good start was important. With five players within 2 shots of the leader, the competition was fierce. Grant Childress (+12), Chris McGee (+12) and Patricio Lopez (+12) would all finish one shot out of a scorecard playoff for second. Corey McCutcheon (+11) played steady through his nine holes to finish in solo second. Keith Gibson (+10) got off to the fast start for the division as he posted par on his opening three holes. Keith was able to minimize his dropped shots to secure the win. Keith wins back to back in the last two Charlotte events.

Division 4 played 8 common holes and was also a tight leaderboard. Geof Smith gets an honorable mention for his third place finish as he was getting ready to make a charge. Raymond Schilling (+4) would finish at +4 with a pair of birdies to help secure second place. Dan Henris (+3), from the Carolina Triad tour, opens his round with a birdie on the first. The birdie proved vital to Dan's one shot victory.

Division 3 played 12 common holes with 29 players in the field and paid out the top five. There was a little more separation on the leaderboard than in other flights, but we know the field was fully focused. With a 3 for 1 scorecard playoff for fifth place, Bradley Haymore (+8)  and Kevin Stines (+8) would come up short of the payout. William Buie (+8) would win the scorecard playoff for fifth. Jake Currie (+7) and his pair of birdies secures fourth place. Timothy Wyatt (+5) also had a pair of birdies to offset his double on the first and secure third place. Doug Stowers (+4) played steady on the day to take home second. Andrew Schwab (+2) played feast or famine for the first seven holes. It was either birdie or bogey. Andrew posted three birdies on the day to secure the victory.

Division 2 played 16 common holes with 35 players in the field and paid out the top six positions. Rick Philo (+8) and Jim Goulding (+8) would need a scorecard playoff to break their tie. Rick would come up short and take sixth place, while Jim takes fifth place. Wes Jones (+7) continues his consistent play with a solo fourth place finish. Joe Tucker (+6) takes third place as Juan Sedano (+6) wins on the scorecard playoff to take second place. Kyle Zeitz (+2) appears to have enjoyed TPC Piper Glen as he posts four birdies in his run away victory.

Division 1 had 17 players in the field paying out the top three positions. D1 was the only division able to complete all 18 holes. Wally Love (38-37-75), Mike Olivario (40-35-75) and Bruce Bevins (41-34-75) would find themselves in the scorecard playoff for third place money. Bruce would go birdie-birdie on 17 and 18 to secure third. Scott Roberts (37-36-73) made his presence known again. An uncharacteristic blunder on the third hole was offset with a pair of birdies on the front nine as Scott made the turn at +1. Scott would have opportunities on the back nine but was unable to capitalize on those chances. Scott finished in solo second. Jerell Fields used his time as an employee at TPC Piper Glen (35-37-72) to his advantage, with numerous rounds under his belt, Jerell only dropped three shots on the day. He offset those with three birdies. Tied coming into 18 with Scott, Jerell would birdie the par 5 to secure the victory.

While we always try to get all players to complete their round, sometimes the best plans don’t always work out as we like. The shift in the weather pattern would ultimately cause us to shorten the event. We understand that many are disappointed as this event was talked about all year. We asked our players to pay $130 for the opportunity to play at one of the premier courses in the Charlotte area.

When our worst case scenario unfolded, we worked diligently with the course leading up to the event and the day of, on what we could do for everyone. Understanding there was a decent chance we may not finish. In an effort to make our members and guests whole, the compromise we came to is the following;

All players registered, paid and on the final roster will have the opportunity to play TPC Piper Glen for a cart fee. The retail value of the round is $110. Additional details will be provided via email to the players later this week.

We have also adjusted all optional cash games in a fair and equitable manner based on the number of holes their respective division played. An email explaining the details was sent to the players on Tuesday morning.
