Tournament Champions
The largest field of the season turned out Saturday for the Upstate Amateur Players Tour’s annual trip to Greer Golf Club. All five divisions featured over 10 players as the golfers enjoyed a preview of summer weather with temperatures reaching above 80 degrees.
The Upstate Amateur Players Tour travels the Upstate of South Carolina, along with portions of North Carolina and Georgia, offering golfers of all skill levels a chance to compete in one of five different divisions. The tour pays cash and VISA gift card prizes to its division winners and also has an optional cash skins game each tournament.
Greer Golf Club has become one of the premier public courses in the Upstate after undergoing an extensive renovation three years ago. The City of Greer committed over $2 million to the renovation of the course, creating a world-class golfing experience in Greenville County.
Here’s a breakdown of the results from Saturday’s tournament by division:
Division 1 – Rodric Overholt used two back nine birdies to secure a two-stroke victory with a round of three-under par, 69. Overholt made three birdies on the front nine to shoot two under par. On the back nine, Overholt took advantage of both par fives, making a pair of birdies to secure the victory.
Barry Graham finished runner-up with a round of 71. Graham found his groove on the front nine, playing the last four hole in three-under par. Graham made three more birdies on the back nine, but could not catch up with Overholt.
Carlos Santana finished third with a round of 73, highlighted by an eagle. Santana finished with four birdies and made an eagle on the par-five 12th hole. John Masotti and Ashton Shope finished tied for fourth place with rounds of 76.
Division 2 – Adam Moore opened his round in style and finished as the Division 2 winner on Saturday with a round of 73. Moore began his day with an eagle on the par-five opening hole, jumpstarting his round. Moore made two more birdies on the day, finishing just one shot clear of the field.
Eric Stanwick was close behind in second place, posting a steady round of 74. Stanwick shot even par on the front nine with a birdie on the first hole. He played his final seven holes of the round in one-under par with a birdie on the par-three 13th hole.
Bill Russell finished third after firing a round of 76. Russell found his groove on the back nine, making three birdies in the first six holes of the closing stretch. Jamie Perez finished fourth with a round of 77, followed by a four-way tie for fifth place including A.J. Lee, Weston Brown, Johnny Moffett, and Jeff Sweat who all carded rounds of 78.
Division 3 – Seven golfers finished withing five shots of the eventual winner in Division 3 on Saturday as John Beck claimed the top spot with a score of 80. Beck made his first birdie of the day on the par-five ninth hole before making six straight pars.
Frederick Velazquez finished third with a round of 81. Velazquez also took advantage of the par-five ninth hole, making birdie. He made another on the par-five 15th hole as he finished just a stroke behind Beck.
Steve Easler shot 82 to finish third. Easler made two birdies on the day, the last of which came on the par-four 14th hole. Myron Samuels finished fourth with a round of 83, followed by Monte Proctor and Doug Robertson in a tie for fifth place with rounds of 84.
Division 4 – Ryan Riffle played the front nine in just two-over par, paving the way to a round of 82 to win Division 4. Riffle birdied the par-four seventh hole before making eagle on the par-five ninth hole.
Zach Hutchinson shot 83 to finish second, as his round included two birdies. Hutchinson attempted to make a back nine charge, playing his final five holes in two over par with a birdie on the par-three 17th.
Robert Gibson, James Gravley, and Russell Loyd Sr. tied for third place with rounds of 84 to round out the top five in the division.
Division 5 – Bill Turner pared four of his first five holes on the back nine leading to a two-stroke victory with a round of 89 in Division 5 on Saturday. Turner opened with three pars in his first six holes before finding his groove at the turn. Turner made three straight pars on the back nine to secure the victory over a crowded field of challengers.
Gene Mason and Desmond Smith finished tied for second place with rounds of 91. Mason made three pars on the day, all of which came on the back nine. Smith’s round was highlighted by a birdie on the par-five 12th hole.
Michael Addison carded a round of 92 to finish fourth, followed by Eric Barnes and Rodney Ferrell in a tie for fifth place with rounds of 94.
Mid-Am (Net) – Adam Moore and Zach Hutchinson shared the top spot in the Mid-Am net division as both golfers finished with rounds of four-under par 68. Moore got off to a hot start, playing his first five holes in four under par as he shot 32 on the front nine. Hutchinson made five net birdies on the front to share the lead at the turn before making a net hole-in-one on the par-three 17th.
Bill Russell finished third with a three-under par round of 69. Russell made three net birdies and a net eagle on the back nine. Jeff Sweat finished fourth with a net round of 70 followed by Jamie Perez, Carlos Santana, Rodric Overholt, and John Beck in a tie for fifth place with net rounds of 71.
Senior (Net) – Bill Turner secured a clean sweep of the weekend as his next round of 70 was enough to claim the top spot in the Senior net division. Turner finished with eight net birdies, including four on the front nine.
Carlose Mojica and James Gravely were close behind in second place with net rounds of 71. Mojica made three net birdies and a net eagle on the back nine as he climbed the leaderboard. Gravely kept his scorecard clean, making two net birdies on the back nine as he carded a back nine score of 35.
Daniel Shelbo and Johnny Moffett rounded out the top five in the division in a tie for fourth place with net rounds of 72.
