The Amateur Players Tour returned home to Annbriar Golf Course in Waterloo, IL, the site of its inaugural event in October of 2018.  Annbriar has been earning accolades, ranked as one of the top golf courses in the state of Illinois and the #1 public course downstate according to Golfweek Magazine’s Course Rankings.  Players would skirt some weather early in the morning each day, but scoring conditions were great and players took advantage of it as 168 players teed it up for over $10,000 in prizes paid out in VISA Gift Cards.

In Division 1, low scores would be the story for the weekend as players from across the country would take advantage of ideal scoring conditions.  Nick Heller (Central IL) had the low-round of the week, a 6-under par 66 that vaulted him into contention on Sunday.  Thomas Brockman (Mid Missouri) shot two consecutive under par rounds of 69-68 to finish at 5-under and earn a one-shot victory over St. Louis’ Michael Flynn, who fell one-shot short of three wins in a row at 4-under par.  Flynn’s 3-under 69 on Sunday fell just one shot short of Brockman, who finished his round with 7 straight pars to secure the win.  Nick Heller finished in 3rd place at -3, with Dylan Davidson (St. Louis) finishing in 4th place with 73-73 to finish at +2.  Rounding out the money was Josh Anderson (Central IL) and Ryan Eckelcamp (St. Louis), who finished the event at +3.

Division 2 would feature a battle between the 2023 North American Champion Darin Mongler (St. Louis) and the 2023 GlobalGolf.com National Player of the Year Mike Lingenfelter (St. Louis) as both players stood in the fairway on 18 tied for the lead at +8, facing a tricky approach to a tucked pin.  Mike Lingenfelter conquered the approach and secured the par he needed to return to the winner’s circle for the 1st time in 2024, finishing with rounds of 75-77 to finish at +8.  Darin Mongler continued his good play of late, finishing just one shot back at +9.  3rd place honors were earned by Chris Scoles (St. Louis) and Scott Horton (St. Louis), who finished just 2 shots off the pace at +10.  Dave Adams (St. Louis) continued his good play at majors, finishing at +11 to earn solo 5th place.  Rounding out the money was Clayton Pilger (St. Louis) at +12.

The trend of low scores would continue in Division 3, as Christian Benavides (St. Louis) opened with an impressive 77 on Saturday.  He followed it up with a 78 on Sunday to earn a 3-shot victory at +11.  Dallas Cook (St. Louis) would apply pressure, firing a career best 75 on Day 2 to finish at +14 and in solo 2nd.  3rd place went to Kenneth Smith (Memphis), who played steady all weekend at +17.  Mark Ralph (St. Louis), Iceman Clark (Memphis) and Chuck Schranck (St. Louis) tied for 4th at +18.  Jeff Morgan (St. Louis) and Allen Hall (Dallas/Ft. Worth)rounded out the money in a tie for 7th at +20.

Division 4 would see some great play as well, as Kansas City’s Zach Terry would turn in his best 2 rounds in his 4 year, 50 tournament round career on the Amateur Players Tour.  Following up a career-best 80 with another exceptional round of 81, Terry cruised to a 9-shot victory.  He started the weekend with a 15.3 APT index and ended the week with a 12.2 and a promotion to division 3.  Congrats on your great play Zach!  Jason Thuet (St. Louis) finished in solo 2nd at +26 with rounds of 88-82.  Christopher Jones (St. Louis)and Dolly Buenaventura (St. Louis) finished in a tie for 3rd at +28, capping off a solid weekend. Timmy Hill (Central IL) finished in a tie for 5th with Larry Eaton (St. Louis) at +29.

Division 5 would see another career best, as the perfect scoring conditions at Annbriar were taken advantage of by JJ Gladden (Mid Missouri)Gladden started out hot with a career best 87 to open up a sizable lead.  A 94 on Sunday was good enough to secure a 7 shot win over Josh Burnett (St. Louis), who shot a stellar 88 on Sunday to finish at +44.  3rd place would go to Tony Brose (St. Louis) at +46, while reigning 2023 GlobalGolf.com Player of the Year Chris Brockmeyer (St. Louis) returned to form with a 4th place finish at +48.

The Open Net Title would go to Christian Benavides and Zach Terry, who tied at 9-under par for the week.  Allen Hall finished in 3rd position at -4, while Dallas Cook (St. Louis) and Iceman Clark (Memphis) finished tied for 5th at -2.  Garrett Wilson (Kansas City) finished in 6th place at 1-under par.

From here, the APT travels east to the mountains of North Carolina for the APT Summer Stableford Shootout  at the beautiful Sequoyah National Golf Club  in Whittier, NC June 15th-16th.  The sold out field of 144 players will be facing massive elevation changes, tricky undulating greens and a fun stableford format!  Registration for the 2024 North American Championship and Senior North American Championship will open on July 9th for Priority Exempt Players and August 1st for all members.
