Tournament Champions
A talented field of competitors made the trek north this past weekend on the Charleston Amatuer Players Tour as it traveled to Columbia Saturday for the Oak Hills Championship held at Oak Hill Golf Club.
Tucked in the heart of northeast Columbia, Oak Hills Golf Club offers golfers a championship-caliber course surrounded by rolling hills and scenic woodlands. Designed by renowned golf architect Steve Melnyk and opened in 1991, the 18-hole, par-72 course features Bermuda fairways and bentgrass greens that challenge players of all skill levels. The club has hosted numerous amateur and professional events over the years and is considered one of the Midlands’ top public golf destinations.
In addition to the course, Oak Hills boasts a full-service pro shop, driving range, and practice greens. Known for its commitment to course maintenance and customer service, the club continues to draw both local regulars and visiting golfers looking for a memorable round in a serene, natural setting.
The Charleston Amatuer Players Tour travels the Lowcountry of South Carolina and portions of Georgia, offering golfers of all skill levels a chance to compete in one of ten different divisions, including senior divisions as well. The tour is designed by the players, for the players, creating a world-class golfing experience for the competitors.
Here’s a breakdown of the results from Saturday’s tournament by division:
Division 1 – Eighteen holes of golf were not enough to decide a winner in Division 1, as in the end, it was Rodrick Overholt who scored the victory in the playoff. Overholt found himself tied with Anthony Clark as both golfers posted rounds of 71.
Overholt’s steady day included two birdies and just one bogey on the front nine to take an early lead. The Abbeville, SC native finished even par on the back nine, closing his round with a birdie on the par-five 18th hole.
Clark reached the playoff by virtue of his back-to-back birdies to close the round on the 17th and 18th holes. Clark led the division with four birdies on the day, including two on the front nine.
Scott Kittleson shot 73 and finished third, followed by William Werner in fourth with a round of 76. John Masotti rounded out the top five with a score of 77.
Division 2 – A.J. Lee added the exclamation point to his round with a birdie on the par-five closing hole as the Gaffney, SC native carded a round of 76 to win Division 2 on Saturday. Lee bounced back from a slow start with a birdie on the par-four fourth hole before a string of six straight pars.
Kevin Futrell and Mark Sgromolo tied for second place in the division, three strokes behind with rounds of 79. Futrell made his lone birdie of the day on the par-five 18th hole, playing the back nine in just three over par. Sgromolov took advantage of the par-four 15th hole, making birdie.
Senior Division 2 – While Kevin Futrell and Mark Sgromolo came close to the Division 2 title, the two duked it out for the top honors in Senior Division 2 on Saturday. After a playoff to settle the tie, it was Futrell who emerged victorious.
Both golfers carded rounds of 79 as Futrell used a birdie on the par-five 18th hole to make the playoff. Sgromolo overcame a slow start to shoot 38 on the back nine, featuring a birdie on the par-four 15th hole.
Division 3 – Cody Markovich built a lead on the front nine and managed to hang on down the stretch, securing the win in Division 3 with a round of 76. Markovich opened his round in style, birding the par-four opening hole as he shot one over par, 37 on the front nine. Markovich also made birdie on the par-five ninth hole.
Scott Johnson finished second, just a shot behind Markovich with a round of 77. Johnson made a charge on the back nine, making five pars and a birdie to climb the leaderboard.
Myron Samuels finished third with a round of 80, followed by Weston Brown and Austin Sweitzer in a tie for fourth place with rounds of 82.
Senior Division 3 – Myron Samuels’ steady front nine paid dividends as the Columbia, SC native made himself right at home Saturday, firing a round of 80 to win Senior Division 3. Samuels made six pars on the front nine before making his lone birdie of the day on the par-four 16th hole as he closed out his round.
Wayne Blyler finished second with a round of 83. Blyler’s round included eight pars, four of which came in a five-hole stretch on the back nine. Mark Lytle shot 94 to finish third, rounding out the division.
Division 4 – Shane Baldwin made two back nine birdies, proving to be the difference in his two-stroke victory Saturday with a round of 84 in Division 4. Baldwin shot 42 on the front nine, including a birdie on the par-four sixth hole. On the back nine, Baldwin made two birdies in a three-hole stretch, climbing the leaderboard and eventually claiming the top spot.
Tracy Franklin finished second with a round of 86. The Columbia, SC native’s round included seven pars, three of which came on the back nine, battling down the stretch with Baldwin.
Matt Steadman finished third with a round of 88, followed by Billy Trull and Randy Poplin in a tie for fourth place with rounds of 90.
Senior Division 4 – While Tracy Franklin’s round of 86 came up just short in Division 4, it was good enough to take the top spot in Senior Division 4 on Saturday. Franklin pared three of his first four holes as he shot 41 on the front nine. Franklin also made three pars in a four-hole stretch on the back nine.
Billy Trull and Randy Poplin finished tied for second place with rounds of 90. Trull played the back nine in 42, ending his round with a birdie on the par-five closing hole. Poplin ended both nines with birdies, taking advantage of the ninth and 18th holes.
Shady Sightler finished fourth after posting a round of 93 as Steve Daniels rounded out the top five with a score of 97.
Division 5 – Dick Jenkins saved his best golf for the final six holes, making four pars down the stretch to card a round of 87 and win Division 5. Jenkins got off to a solid start with four pars and a round of 42 on the front nine. After a slow start to the back nine, Jenkins made four pars down the stretch to preserve his lead and score the victory.
Brendan Daniels finished second with a round of 91. Daniels made the lone birdie in the division, taking advantage of the par-five ninth hole. Wyatt Fulbright and Thomas Yarbrough tied for third place with rounds of 99, followed by Barry Crocker and Vern Verna in a tie for fifth place with scores of 101.
Senior Division 5 – Dick Jenkins made it a clean sweep of the weekend as his round of 87 was also enough to claim the top spot in Senior Division 5. Jenkins made four pars on the back nine to secure the victory by 12 strokes.
Thomas Yarbrough came home in second place with a round of 99. Yarbrough made two pars on the day, including one on the par-four 15th hole. Barry Crocker and Vern Verna tied for third place with rounds of 101. Verna’s round was highlighted by a fast start, making four pars in his first eight holes. Steve Yasses rounded out the division in fifth place with a score of 108.
