Tournament Champions
Close competition was the story of the day this past weekend as the Charleston Amateur Players Tour traveled to Santee, SC for its tournament at Lake Marion Golf Couse. Across the divisions, the leaders were separated by the narrowest of margins, leading to an exciting and thrilling day on the golf course.
Lake Marion Golf Course, opened in 1978, is a perennial favorite with traveling golfers and features fantastic Miniverde greens that are in perfect shape all year long. Designed by Eddie Riccoboni, Lake Marion will challenge players with pine tree-lined fairways, bordering lakes and 47 sand bunkers. Lake Marion is an extremely fair test of golf and is sure to please players of all abilities.
The Charleston Amateur Players Tour travels the Lowcountry of South Carolina, offering golfers of all skill levels a chance to compete across ten different divisions. Saturday, over $4,500 in cash and VISA gift card prizes were up for grabs. The tour also has an optional cash skins game each tournament for competitors.
Here’s a breakdown of the results from Saturday’s tournament by division:
Division 2 – Kevin Hoffmann made two front nine birdies to shoot one under par on the opening stretch, paving the way for his victory in Division 2 with a round of 76. The Prospect, KY native took advantage of the first and seventh holes with birdies to shoot 35 on the front nine.
Chuck Bell applied the pressure, finishing just one shot short of a playoff with a round of 77. Bell played the front nine in just one over par before a back nine charge that included a birdie on the par-five closing hole.
Sean Mason finished third, close behind with a round of 78. Mason’s steady day included 12 pars, four of which came in the last five holes.
Casey Robinson finished fourth with a round of 80, followed by Alfred Meggett, Scott Kennedy, and Dixon Flowers in a tie for fifth place with rounds of 81.
Senior Division 2 – Kevin Hoffmann recorded a clean sweep of the weekend, using his round of 76 to also win Senior Division 2. After his first bogey of the day on the par-four fifth hole, Hoffmann bounced back two holes later with a birdie to shoot one under par on the front nine.
Chuck Bell finished runner-up after a round of 77 that featured two birdies. Bell birdied the par-four fifth hole to get to one under on his round. His final birdie came on the par-five 18th hole.
Casey Robinson finished third with a round of 80, which included a birdie on the par-three second hole to settle into the round. Scott Kennedy finished fourth after posting an 81. Kennedy’s highlight of the round came on the par-five 16th hole, making birdie en route to shooting just two over par on the back nine.
Kevin Lyles rounded out the top five with a score of 83 in fifth place.
Division 3 – The top five golfers finished within five shots of the lead as when the dust settled, it was Larry Penfield who emerged victorious with a round of 78. Penfield started his round in styling, birding the par-five opening hole. The Walterboro, SC native played the back nine in just two over par, aided by a birdie on the par-four 13th hole.
Chris Minar was close behind in second place, posting a round of 79. Minar birdied the par-four 14th hole to play his final five holes in one over par.
Parker Futrell and Tom Leonard finished tied for third after both players carded rounds of 81. Allen Morrell rounded out the top five in the division with a score of 83.
Senior Division 3 – Larry Penfield’s round of 78 was also enough to win Senior Division 3 on Saturday, clearing second place finisher Chris Minar by just one stroke. Penfield shot 40 on the front nine before carding a three-over round of 39 on the back nine to secure the win.
Minar finished second with his round of 79 that included a birdie on the par-four 14th hole as he attempted to climb into the lead. Tom Leonard finished third with a round of 81, highlighted by a birdie on the par-four ninth hole.
Allen Morrell finished fourth with a score of 83. Morrell took advantage of two par fives, birding the fourth and 18th holes. Lyle Gumer rounded out the top five in the division with a score of 86.
Division 4 – Thomas Gibson pared four of his final five holes, proving to be enough to win Division 4 with a round of 84. Gibson settled into his round with four pars in a five-hole stretch on the front nine. On the back nine, Gibson buckled down, making a string of three consecutive pars to close the round.
Shady Sightler finished second with a round of 87. Sightler made two birdies on the day, including one on the par-five opening hole. Jeff Legan, Casey Price, Cooter Douglas, and Tacy Franklin finished tied for third place after all four golfers posted rounds of 89.
Price and Douglas both managed to make back nine birdies, climbing into a tie for third to chart a top five finish.
Senior Division 4 – The same battle between Thomas Gibson and Shady Sightler played out in Senior Division 4 Saturday, as in the end it was Gibson who emerged victorious with a round of 84.
Sightler was close behind in second place after posting an 87. Sightler tied for the most birdies in the division, making two on the day.
Casey Price, Cooter Douglas, and Tracy Franklin finished tied for third place with rounds of 89. Price’s round featured a birdie on the par-three 11th hole as Douglas took advantage of the par-four 14th hole.
Division 5 – John Greider’s consecutive back nine birdies proved to be the difference as he narrowly won Division 5 Saturday with a round of 89. Greider finished one shot clear of second place finisher Steve Reeves, who posted a round of 90.
After a round of 46 on the front nine, Greider found his groove midway through the back nine, making two straight birdies on Nos. 13 and 14 to climb the leaderboard.
Reeves made three back nine pars as he attempted to keep pace with Greider, eventually falling just a single stroke short. Ray Pazornick and Eric Barnes tied for third place with rounds of 94 as Jan Gamlin rounded out the top five with a score of 96.
Senior Division 5 – While Steven Reeves came up just short of the victory in Division 5, his round of 90 was enough to win Senior Division 5. The Cottageville, SC native made four pars on his front nine and three on the back to secure the win by four strokes.
Ray Pazornick finished second with a round of 94, followed by Bubba Atkinson in third place after carding a 95. Jan Gamlin shot 96 to finish fourth as Barry Crocker came home fifth with a 97.
