Amateur Players Tour of Florida – Southwest Tournament Recap

    Calusa Country Club – July 27, 2025

It was a very hot and sunny day in southwest Florida on July 27, and we hosted the ninth event of our 2025 season at the new Calusa Country Club!  Despite the extreme heat and the relatively new course, most people enjoyed the day hanging out and playing some golf!  Highlights of the day included:

    • Division 1: Robert Greene kept up his good play and jumped out to a 2-stroke lead with a scorching -1 front 9.  Chase Bertrand was just 2 shots behind with Gage Basiletti just a couple more back.  On the back nine, Basiletti would turn things around with a +1 on the back, but Greene stayed as hot as the weather and posted an even par back nine for an impressive -1 (71) and his second win of the season.
    • Division 2: On the front nine, Daren Green and Mike Aranzullo jumped out to the early lead with +3 39s, but Rocky was just 2 shots back at 41.  Green stayed consistent on the back firing another 39, but Rocky would get it all together and post an even par 36 on the back to take the one stroke victory over Green and his second win in-a-row!
    • Division 3: Jeff Rainford raced out to a 3-shot lead over Josh Acevedo at the turn, with the rest of the field at least another 3 shots behind Acevedo.  On the back nine, Rainford would stumble a little to a 40, but Acevedo couldn’t manage to gain any ground as he posted a 43, giving Rainford the win.
    • Division 4: D4 saw John Moore jump out to a 3-shot lead over Gregg Carr and Dan Wojcik on the front 9.  On the back nine, Andy Halek was able to card a 41 on the back to gain ground on the field, but Moore was able to beat that by 1 and take the victory!  Halek’s strong back-nine allowed him to catch Carr, and they tied for second.
    • Division 5: Rick Gill turned in the best front nine score at 47 and a 2-shot lead over Andrew Lampert, 3 over Mike Abbott, and 4 over Quentin Allen and Greg Gastfield.  The heat of the day started to take it’s toll on all the players!  Allen was able to better his front nine while everyone else struggled.  Lampert was only one stroke worse on the back and carded a 95, but it was not enough to catch Gill who turned in a 94 for a one-shot victory.
    • Senior Net: 16 of the 21 eligible players participated in the Senior Net game.  There were a lot of good scores in the Net game at Calusa Country Club!  In the end, our D4 winner, John Moore took home the top prize with a very impressive -5.  Jeff Rainford, our D3 winner took second with a solid performance at -3, with Mike Bushee taking third with a -1.

A huge thank you goes out to Dylan Wright and the entire staff at Calusa Country Club for stepping up and hosting our group at the last minute due to some maintenance at one of our other event courses.  The day was very hot and since the clubhouse is not completed yet, we all made the best of a less than ideal situation!

Our next event is at Wellen Park Golf & Country Club in Venice, on Sunday, August 3.  Remember, the more players we get, the bigger the payouts!  Sign up now for your spot to play!
