Amateur Players Tour of Florida – Southwest Tournament Recap
Eagle Ridge Golf Club – June 1, 2025
The forecast in southwest Florida on this first day in June at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Fort Myers did not look good! Despite the forecast, and a few showers throughout the day, we managed to crown champions in our 5 divisions! Division 2 even took extra holes to decide the winner between 4 different players! Despite the wet conditions, everyone had a great time! Highlights of the day included:
- Division 1: In D1, Max Ellis jumped out to an early 2-shot lead after the front nine over Davis Coss. On the back nine, Ellis pulled away with a 1-over 37, and Coss was unable to track him down. Ellis came away with the victory with a solid 4 over 76.
- Division 2: D2 was a hotly contested race between 5 players for most of the day. Frank Gomes jumped out to an early 3-shot lead at the turn, over Allen Moore, Jeff Busby, and Nick Westbrook, with Greg Deptula just a couple back of them. On the back, Gomes would falter a bit while Moore and Busby shot 1-over 37s to tie him. Greg Deptula made an amazing turn around, firing a 1-under 35 on the back to also join the group. In the 4-person playoff, Gomes and Deptula both parred the first hole while Moore and Busby took untimely bogies to drop out. On the second playoff hole, both players hit good drives in the fairway. Gomes hit the green with about a 20-footer for birdie. Deptula hit his approach just right of the green, and he chipped up to about 18 feet. Gomes’ birdie putt came up a little short, but Deptula missed his par attempt. Both players made 4 footers, but Gomes made par to Deptula’s bogey winning the playoff.
- Division 3: D3 saw a guest, Vic Moscevsky jump out to an early 2-shot lead over Josh Acevedo. On the back nine, Nathan Royse turned in a 4-over 40 to gain ground on Moscevsky who shot 41, but it was not enough and Moscevsky grabbed his first APT victory!
- Division 4: This has been the hottest contested group of the season and this week didn’t disappoint. Andy Halek was back in the field and he fired a 4-over 40 on the front, just 1-shot up on John Moore, and 2 ahead of John Oursler. Halek kept up his torrid pace and shot another 40 on the back for a 4-shot victory over Moore and Oursler.
- Division 5: D5 was a close and exciting one to watch all day! Mike Abbott jumped out to a 1-shot lead after the front nine over Jackie Rush, 2 ahead of Quinton Allen, and 3 ahead of Jeromy Sigler. On the back nine, Allen carded a 43 on the back and turned his 2-stroke deficit into a 2-shot win over Abbott!
- Senior Net: We had 11 of the 19 eligible players participate in the Senior Net game this week. No surprise that Andy Halek ran away with this one shooting -6 with John Moore and John Oursler finishing at even par and tying for second.
A huge thank you goes out to Drew Weeks, and his assistant, Kevin and the entire staff at Eagle Ridge for having the course in good shape!
Our next event is at Webbs Reserve in Babcock Ranch, and it will be on Father’s Day, June 15. Remember, the more players we get, the bigger the payouts! Sign up now for your spot to play! Registration closes on June 8!
