Tournament Champions
Tour Stop #9 of the season “The battle at the rock” was held at Oak Quarry Golf Club, Riverside, CA. We had our largest turn out for any one-day event ever on tour with 72 golfers! 3 Golfers from Las Vegas joined us but everyone else was from SoCal. The course was in great condition and the weather was amazing. So let’s get to the action….
Division 1: We had a great field of 12 division 1 golfers with Leonardo Giron (Chula Vista, CA) back in the field after his second-place finish at the wine country championships in which he won his APT membership. Joel Clark (Irvine, CA) and Kawika Morse (Laguna Hills, CA) were out strong after 4 holes. Angel Sotelo (Downey, CA) played the front nine at 1 over and was in contention going to the back. As the golfers made the turn Joel Clark was -2 after hole 10 and holding a 3 shot lead over Leonardo Giron. His last win with the APT was at Desert Willow on Jan 4th and Joel is currently in the top 3 points race to make the SoCal Ryder Cup team. Joel played solid down the stretch and was able to secure his second win on tour with a great round of 73! Angel Sotelo finished second at 75 and Kawika Morse was third with 76.
Division 2: Thomas Crowder (Glendale, CA) playing with a tee bump at age 70 made eagle on hole 1 as he drained it from the fairway! Wow what a way to start the round! Vinny O’Brien (Sun Valley, CA) has had several second place finishes this season and was looking to break through with a first place. Matt Baiza (Las Vegas, NV) and Phil Caccamise (Laguna Hills, CA) former director of the SoCal APT were both in the division 2 field and great to have them. They both were in contention after nine holes and pressing Thomas. Also new member to the tour Jacob Won (Fullerton, CA) also started strong with birdie on #1 and looking to make a statement in his first event. As they all turned to the back nine Vinnie made back-to-back birdies and Jacob made an eagle on number 14! Bummer, he didn’t enter Super Skins as he would have won $215, next time Jacob. As they approached 18, Vinnie was in the clubhouse with a 79 and Thomas needed par to win and he made bogey to force a playoff. On hole 1 of the playoff Thomas made a 4 and Vinnie a 5 to finish second and Thomas with his first win on the APT! Congrats to all.
Division 3: Our largest division field of the day with 20 golfers. Matthew Tokunaga (Las Vegas, NV) was back after finishing third in our wine country championship and out in the first group. Tyrese Patterson (Las Vegas, NV) was also back and playing well along with our current points leader Will Kamp (Los Angeles, CA). Timothy Bias (La Verne, CA) was back after a few events off and contending. Matthew and Will both in the clubhouse with 78 and 81 were holding at first and second. Will was able to collect a super skin on 1 of his birdies and collect $215! Tyrese and Timothy both playing in the same group needed to par 18 to shake up the results along with Scott Chalayan Cessna (Anaheim, CA) They both did and allowed Tyrese to pull out the win with a 77 which is a great division 3 score. Timothy finished with an 81 and tied for third with Will and Matthew took second with his 78.
Division 4: Another nice field in division 4 with 18 players, including one of our female contestants Baska Tugsgerel (Irvine, CA). Brad Forsyth (Alta Loma, CA) was out strong with a +4 on the front nine! Last years player of the year Marty Rhinehart (Upland, CA) was in contention and battling down the stretch. Brad posted a great round in division 4 of 82, after taking double bogey on 18 and set the mark for the others. Marty and Baska playing in the same group were going back and forth. Marty took a couple double bogeys coming down the stretch and Baska was able to make bogey which separated her by one with an 84 and Marty with an 85. Alfredo Arroyo (Huntington Beach, CA) played great and birdied 17 to help him tie Marty for third place with an 85. Brad with his great round of 82 took home first place and $270 prize money.
Division 5: Tommy Weatherby (Sun City, CA) Season points leader was trying to hold off newcomer Royce Jiang (Diamond Bar, CA) as Tommy posted a great D5 score of 91 shooting a 2 over 39 on the back nine! However, Royce started off HOT, with back to back birdies to start his round. Unfortunately, he didn’t enter any of the skins games and missed out on some money, oops. Osman Atiq (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) was holding strong and nearly pulled off the win but took a triple bogey 8 on 18 to put him in third with a 93. Fortunately for Royce we have the triple bogey max rule for divisions 3-5 and as he took the 18th tee after making birdie on 17 with the win as he ended up taking triple bogey on 18 and he won by 1shot with a 90! Wow that was close, congrats to Royce for his first ever win in golf and on the APT.
Senior Net Contest
Tyrese Patterson (Las Vegas, NV) and Brad Forsyth (Alta Loma, CA) took first and second place money in the senior net with the great rounds they shot. They were tied coming to 18 but Brad took double bogey giving Tyrese the win.
