The APT headed to the Valley of the Sun for the Worldwide Golf Cactus Clash @ TPC Scottsdale in Scottsdale, AZ. Saturday’s round at the Champions course offered a great desert golf introduction to the players who travelled to Arizona for this major.  Day 1 was highlighted by a Hole in One on the par 4, 15th hole by Jeff Fassero from the Phoenix Chapter.  Sunday’s round was hosted at the Stadium course which plays host to the PGA Tours’ Waste Management Phoenix Open.  With temperatures ranging from the low 80’s to the low 100’s as the day progressed, it proved to be a challenge for all. 150 players from 30 different chapters from across the country traveled to Scottsdale for The Cactus Clash, with players gaining access to the exclusive field by earning priority exemptions based on their finishes in 2024 in their local chapter.

In Division 1, Marc Young (Houston) jumped out to an early lead that he would not relinquish after shooting a 3 under par round of 68.  This was a lead he would never lose as he backed that round up with an Even par round of 71 on Sunday, winning by 5 shots.  Taylor Gossett (Oklahoma City) would cruise to a runner-up finish with rounds of 71-73 to finish at +2. Joshua Crossen (Las Vegas) and Hayden Breen (Phoenix) finished in a tie for 3rd with both players shooting +5 over the 2-day competition.

Division 2 lived up to the hype of a major championship as the leaderboard was never going to show who was going to win as players moved up and down from the top spot all tournament long.  When the scores were all turned in, a playoff was needed as Curt Bressner (Phoenix) (76-76) and Jeff Clifford (Utah) (74-78) finished in a tie at 10 over par.  It took 3 holes to crown Curt Bressner as our champion in Division 2.  Third place went to Steve Wallace (Phoenix) who shot a 2-day total of +11.  Fourth went to Augusta Chapter Owner Jeremy Key with a 2-day total of +12 and rounding out the top 5 was Tyler Moore (UTAH) with a two-day total of (+13).

Division 3 saw 53 players battle it out over 2 days in the heat.  Pat Ryan (Myrtle Beach) came into round 2, 3 shots back.  Pat played consistently and not only made up the ground but pulled away near the end.  Pat’s two-day total of +18 (78-82) was good for a 1 shot victory.  Cody Bean (UTAH) and Leonard Wells (Phoenix) finished in a tie for second place with both players shooting two-day totals of 161 (+19).  Adam Dean (Central Illinois) and Matt Tokunaga (Las Vegas) finished in a tie for fourth with both players shooting two-day totals of 164 (+22).  Will Houston (Nashville), Chase Hatcher (Southern California) and Scott Gennusa (Kansas City) finished in a tie for sixth with all 3 players shooting two-day totals of 166 (+24). Rounding out the paying positions were Michael Shirley (Upstate) and Johnny Gastelum (Phoenix) with both players shooting two-day totals of 167 (+25).

In Division 4, 36 holes would not prove to be enough to determine a winner.  Trenton Smith (Utah) and Dolly Buenaventura (St. Louis) both played extremely well coming home in very difficult conditions.  Trenton played the last 3 holes in 1 over par while Dolly finished the last 3 in 1 under par which included 2 birdies.  Both players tied with two-day totals of 166 (+24). The playoff didn’t take long as Trenton won the playoff on the first playoff hole.  Jeremy Conetah (Utah) finished in third place with a two-day total of 171(+29).  Zac Tredway (St. Louis) finished in fourth place with a two-day total of 173 (+31).  Nicholas Crouse (Iowa) and Garvice Eakins (Seattle) finished in a tie for 5th place with matching two-day totals of 185 (+33).

In Division 5, the leaderboard is always in flux as players battle and move and down the leaderboard.  When the dust settled on this day, Mitchell McDannald (Atlanta) was our victor by 1 shot with a two-day total of 185 (+43).   Matt Walden (UTAH) finished in second, just one shot back at 186 (+44).  Arthur Miller Jr (Memphis) finished third with a two-day total of 187 (+45).  Garye Lafevers (Phoenix) and Dick Czeslawski (Phoenix) finished in a Tie for 4th place with matching two-day totals of 190 (+48)

In Open Net, Trenton Smith (Utah) earned the victory finishing at 5-under net for the event earning a 3-shot victory over Tyler Moore (Utah) who finished at -2.  Jeff Clifford (Utah) finished third with a score of even par. Will Houston (Nashville) and Cody Bean (Utah) shared fourth place honors at +1.  Hayden Been (Phoenix), Jeremy Key (Augusta), Nicholas Lazarchuck (New Jersey), Scott Gennusa (Kansas City), Nicholas Crouse (Iowa) and Garvice Eakins (Seattle) all finished in tie for sixth place at +2.

The Senior Net Championship is Dolly Buenaventura (St. Louis) with a 2-day net total of -7.  Pat Ryan (Myrtle Beach) took home second place with a score of -6. Third place went to Steve Wallace (Phoenix) with a score of -3.  Jody Barrett (Nashville) was fourth at Even par. Dennis McGraw (Utah) was the fifth-place finisher at +1.  Troy Shadeed (Southern California) was in sixth place at +2.  Jason Dale (Nashville), Dan Kennelly (New Jersey), Steven Beckstead (Utah) and Chris Toomes (Phoenix) all finished in a tie for Seventh.  Mick Hubert (Augusta), Michael Goulet (Phoenix) and Roberto Covarrubias (Southern California) all finished in a Tie for Eleventh.
