Double Down at French Lick Delivers Drama as Players Make Final Major Push Before Scottsdale
With the North American Championship just weeks away, players from across the country gathered at French Lick Resort for the Double Down at French Lick, the second-to-last major championship of the 2026 APT season. Two rounds of championship golf tested every part of players’ games as valuable National Major points and momentum heading into Scottsdale were on the line.
The weekend produced standout performances, a playoff in Division 1, and several players separating themselves as the season enters its final stretch.
Division 1
Division 1 delivered one of the most exciting finishes of the weekend, with Barney Sutley (Indianapolis) and Adam Yarbrough (Atlanta) matching one another shot for shot over 36 holes. Yarbrough held a one-shot advantage after opening with a 74, but Sutley answered with a steady final-round 80 to erase the deficit and force a playoff after both players finished at 13-over-par 155.
The championship was decided on the opening playoff hole, where Sutley made a composed par while Yarbrough settled for bogey, giving Sutley his National Major victory. It was a fitting finish to one of the strongest Division 1 battles of the season, with both players showing remarkable consistency over two demanding rounds on the Donald Ross Course.
The battle behind them was nearly as competitive. Andrew Parson (Dallas/Fort Worth), Blake Claycomb (Indianapolis), and Sean Boyle (Myrtle Beach) all finished tied for third at 158, while several players remained within striking distance entering the final nine holes before French Lick’s closing stretch ultimately separated the field.
Division 2
Joseph Lacy (Birmingham) turned in one of the most consistent performances of the weekend, posting identical rounds of 75 to finish at 8-over-par 150. While others battled momentum swings throughout the two-day championship, Lacy avoided costly mistakes and steadily built a five-shot advantage to claim the Division 2 title.
Christopher Wright (Virginia Capital) improved on his opening-round 78 with a solid 77 on Sunday to secure runner-up honors at 155. Bob Hanneken (Orlando) made one of the strongest moves of the final round, improving six strokes from Saturday with a closing 75 to tie Jeff Clifford (Utah) for third at 156.
Lacy’s victory also carries added significance in the National Player of the Year race, earning valuable National Major points heading into the season’s final major championship.
Division 3
Harry Jones (Virginia Capital) separated himself from the field through steady play over both rounds, carding scores of 83 and 86 to finish at 27-over-par 169. While scoring conditions remained challenging throughout the championship, Jones consistently minimized big numbers and maintained control down the stretch to earn the Division 3 title.
The race for second remained undecided until late Sunday afternoon. John Blackburn (Indianapolis) and Andre Banks (Charlotte) both finished at 170 to share runner-up honors, just one stroke behind Jones, while Kent Muraoka (Southern California) finished fourth at 172 after remaining in contention for much of the weekend.
French Lick once again proved that patience often outweighs aggression, with every player in contention forced to navigate the demanding Donald Ross design over two long days of championship golf.
Division 4
Christopher Berry (Columbus) saved his best golf for the final round, improving three strokes on Sunday after opening with an 87. His closing 84 was enough to finish at 171 and capture the Division 4 championship after a disciplined performance over 36 holes.
James Plaire (Las Vegas) and Chris Huge (Myrtle Beach) shared second place at 174, while Justin Levine (St. Louis) finished just one shot behind them at 175. Berry’s ability to limit mistakes during the final round proved to be the difference as several players remained within reach entering the back nine.
The victory also strengthens Berry’s position entering the final National Major of the season as the race toward Scottsdale continues to tighten.
Division 5
Robert Rosenbaum (Iowa) put together two steady rounds of 92 and 89 to claim the Division 5 championship at 181. His three-shot improvement on Sunday helped create separation from the field and secure a six-shot victory.
Mike Osbourn (Kentucky) finished runner-up at 187 after opening with the low round of the division before a difficult second day, while Danny Acosta (Las Vegas) rounded out the top three at 191.
With National Major points on the line, Rosenbaum’s victory provides a significant boost as Division 5’s National Player of the Year race remains one of the closest across the Tour.
Mid-Am Net
The Mid-Am Net division produced some of the tournament’s lowest scores despite the demanding conditions. Justin Levine (St. Louis) caught fire during Sunday’s final round, following an opening 72 with an outstanding five-under-par 67 to finish at 139 (-3) and pull away for a two-shot victory.
Christopher Berry (Columbus) continued his excellent weekend by finishing second at 141 (-1), while Tyler Whittaker (Kentucky) claimed third at even-par 142 after posting consecutive rounds of 72 and 70.
Levine’s closing round was among the best of the championship and demonstrated how quickly momentum can shift during a two-day National Major.
Senior Net
Christopher Wright (Virginia Capital) capped off an outstanding weekend by adding the Senior Net championship to his runner-up finish in Division 2 Gross. Wright posted matching rounds of 70 to finish at two-under-par 140, the only player in the division to finish under par for the championship.
Larry Barber (New Jersey/Philadelphia) claimed second at 143 after an impressive opening-round 64 before settling for a 79 on Sunday. Chris Huge (Myrtle Beach) and Shawn Larsen (Utah) tied for third at 144, while Larry Weilbaker (Indianapolis) completed the top five at 145.
Wright’s championship performance not only earned a National Major title but also significantly tightened the Senior Net National Player of the Year race entering the final major of the season.
The next and final major is the Southern Brawl at Bear’s Best in Suwanee, Georgia. The Amateur Players Tour is looking forward to seeing the field of players on the east coast for the last major of the season!
