The Charleston Amatuer Players Tour kicked off its new season in earnest on Sunday, hosting its elevated event at Ocean Creek Golf Club, located at Fripp Island Golf and Beach Resort.

Ocean Creek Golf Club, designed by PGA Champion Davis Love III and Paul Cowley, was opened in 1995. Incorporating sweeping views of saltwater marshes, freshwater lagoons, lush jungle vegetation and four distinctive rolling dune ridges, the beautiful course is 6,392 total yards and a par 71. “The Creek” features five sets of tees that make the course enjoyable for all skill levels and a fair challenge to the advanced player.

The Charleston Amatuer Players Tour travels the Lowcountry of South Carolina, offering golfers of all skill levels a chance to compete in one of five different divisions. The tour offers cash and VISA gift card prizes along with an optional cash skins game. Designed by the players, for the players, the Charleston Amatuer Players Tour strives to create a world-class golfing experience for its competitors.

Here’s a breakdown of the results from Sunday’s tournament by division:

Division 1 – Darryl Phelps was the class of the field in Division 1, firing a two-under par round of 69 to secure the top spot by nine strokes. Phelps steady day included a round of three-under on the front nine, including two birdies and an eagle on the par-four fourth hole.

David Gibson finished second with a round of 78. Gibson started his round in style, birding the par-five opening hole. Like Phelps, Gibson also made eagle, taking advantage of the par-four 13th hole.

Andrew Scarano finished third with a round of 79, followed by Jody Clary in fourth place with a score of 80. Thomas Owens rounded out the division with a round of 82 in fifth place.

Division 2 – Eighteen holes of golf proved not to be enough as Justin Bryant, Phil VanGeersdaelen, and Terry Upright all carded rounds of 77. When the dust settled in the playoff, it was Bryant who emerged victorious. Bryant saved his best golf for the back nine, birding the par-four 14th hole as he shot just one-over par on the closing stretch.

VanGeersdaelen and Upright finished tied for second place after the playoff. VanGeersdaelen got off to a solid start, paring eight of the holes on the front nine. Upright closed his round in strong fashion, making five pars in a row to close the day.

Weston Brown finished fourth with a round of 79, including two birdies on the day. Ned Madden, Kevin Lyles, and Dean Crouch finished tied for fifth place with rounds of 80.

Division 3 – Eleven golfers finished within four strokes of the eventual winner in Division 3, as Tyler Phillips outlasted the crowded field with a round of 83 to win the division. Phillips made nine pars on the day, including four in his final six holes to secure a one stroke victory.

Misael Moreno was close behind in second place with a round of 84. Moreno made 11 pars on the day, including five on the back nine to finish runner-up. Allen Morrell, Jeff Best, and Larry Penfield finished tied for sixth place with scores of 86, just three shots off the pace set by Phillips.
