Tournament Champions
The Columbus and Cincinnati/Dayton Chapters of the Amateur Players Tour traveled to beautiful Majestic Springs Golf Course in Wilmington, Ohio on May 31st for a one-day tournament featuring 58 players from Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, North Carolina, and Maryland.
Known as the “Best Kept Secret in Ohio,” Majestic Springs is a challenging 18-hole links-style layout that opened in 1999. Rolling meadows, thick, rough, woodlands, a crystal-clear stream, nine ponds, 58 bunkers, and dramatic elevation changes provided a true test of golf on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.
Division 1
Jackson, Ohio’s Jack Cyrus continue his hot streak, capturing his second consecutive Amateur Players Tour victory with an even-par 71. Joshua Turich of Dayton finished just one shot back at +1, while Troy Boswell of Reynoldsburg rounded out the top three at +3.
Division 2
18 holes weren’t enough to determine a champion in Division 2 as Blake Smith of Lancaster and Michael Marinangeli of Grove City both finished regulation at 2-over-par 73. Smith, who carded four birdies during regulation, added another in the playoff to secure the victory and bring the trophy and prize money back to Fairfield County. Matthew Harig of Uniontown finished third with a 77.
Division 3
The largest swing of momentum throughout the day came in Division 3, where four different players held the lead at various points during the round. In the end, Brandon Kristy of Reynoldsburg fired a season-best 77 to claim the victory. Frank Machesky of Jackson finished runner-up, while Benjamin Anderson of Fort Thomas, Kentucky finished just two shots behind the winner to round out the top three.
Division 4
Division 4 came down to the final hole. Current Columbus Division 4 Player of the Year points leader Van Rome of Canal Winchester entered the 18th hole with the lead, but a double bogey opened the door for Johnny Sherman of Ashville. Sherman, currently second in the Columbus Division 4 Player of the Year standings, capitalized and earned the victory with a round of 83. Rome and Tim Shepard of Cincinnati tied for second at 84.
Division 5
Tyler Philo of Beavercreek continued his remarkable season, going wire-to-wire to earn his fifth victory of the year. The Cincinnati/Dayton Division 5 Player of the Year leader fired a career-low 80 to hold off Newark’s Aaron Holman, the current Columbus Division 5 Player of the Year leader, who finished with an 88. Philip Evers of Milford finished third at 93.
Mid-Am Net
Tyler Philo wasn’t finished collecting hardware. He completed the double-dip by capturing the Mid-Am Net title, finishing two shots ahead of Johnny Sherman. Rob Braun of Alexandria, Kentucky finished third.
Senior Net
Michael Marinangeli added a trophy to his playoff appearance by winning the Senior Net division. He finished two shots ahead of Frank Machesky and Jack Cyrus.
Danny Bay and Kasey Dickenson would like to thank the entire staff at Majestic Springs Golf Course for their outstanding hospitality and for providing a beautiful golf course that was enjoyed by all competitors.
The Columbus and Cincinnati/Dayton Chapters return to action on June 14th for another Elevated Event at Snow Hill Golf Course.
