Amateur Players Tour of Florida – Southwest Tournament Recap

The Club at Gateway – July 19, 2026

With a tropical storm forming in the Gulf, the day started off very wet as one of the outer bands dropped about a half inch of rain during the course setup!  Fortunately, the only ones to really get wet were Kelly and Steve as no one had yet arrived for the day!  Despite the wet starting conditions, everyone had a great time, as the storm moved out and the players finished without incident!  Highlights of the day included:

    • Division 1: We had a smaller than normal field this week, but some familiar faces were playing.  D1 points leader, Gage Basiletti jumped out to a 4-shot lead on the front nine over Robert Greene.  After last weeks 2nd place finish at Waterlefe after a playoff, Basiletti was determined to bring home the win this week!  And he heldoff Greene who was forced to gamble on the last hole and his second shot to the par 5 drifted out of bounds, and so did his chance for victory.  Basiletti took home his third win of the 2026 season in Southwest Florida with a +2 74, and a comfortable lead in the D1 points race.
    • Division 2: We were light on players in this division as well, but we did have both points leaders in Danny Magruder and Nick Westbrook!  Magruder would jump out to a 1-stroke lead after an even par front nine over returning member, Michael Smith and 4-shots over Westbrook.  In the end, Magruder would cruise to victory with a +1 (73) after some stellar putting on the back nine!  This Player of the Year race is far from over as both Westbrook and Magruder have each won 4 times!
    • Division 3: This was one of our larger groups this week with 7 players.  Our current D3 points leader, Mike Steele had shoulder surgery and won’t be able to play any more events this season, opening the door for others to take over!  Our third-place points getter, Greg Carr jumped out to a 1-stroke lead over newcomer, Tommy DeMartini, and two over John Moore after the front nine. However, on the back, Josh Acevedo would turn his game around and post a 41 on the back to overcome Carr and newcomer, Darrell Bourlier by one shot for his second victory in a row and his third of the season!  This is a tight points race as well, especially since next weekend is a double points elevated event.
    • Division 4: With our current D4 points leader, Clay Metzger, sitting out this week, it was a good week to make up some ground!  Two newcomers, Rich Camba, and Bill Connington, fired 43 and 42 respectively, with D4 stalwart, Andy Halek one more back at 44.  On the back nine, Camba would improve on his front nine with a 42 and then wait for Halek to finish.  Halek had an untimely triple on 17 and a bogey on 18 to lose to Camba by one.  This was Camba’s second win of the 2026 season.
    • Division 5: Since his return to playing APT events at Heritage Landing, Mike Abbott has posted some incredible D5 scores!  After finishing second at Heritage to Mike Bushee (now in D4!) with an 82, Abbott kept up his strong play at Gateway!  After the front nine, he had a 4 shot lead on Quinton Allen and 5 on Rick Gill.  Gill would improve his back nine by two shots and still could not catch Abbott who posted an 83 for the win!  Welcome back to the tour Mr. Abbott!
    • Mid-Am Net: We only had 6 players in the field this week, but current points leader, Jeromy Sigler was one of them as was the second-place person, Gage Basiletti.  Basiletti would take the lead after the front nine with a -1 (35) followed by Quinton Allen (36), Nick Westbrook (38) and Sigler at 39.  Sigler had some ground to make up on Basiletti to keep his lead, and he did just that, firing a 35 of his own on the back to tie Quinton Allen for first with +2 (74).  This points race is tight heading down the stretch!  Sigler notched his third win of the season, but he know Basiletti is right behind him!
    • Senior Net: We had a good field for this one with 14 players with our current leader in points, Greg Gastfield looking to increase his lead!  This one started out closewith Michael Smith and Mike Abbott shooting -3 (33) on the front with Danny Magruder just one behind.  Magruder would post an even par 36 on the back to finish second as Abbott improved on his front nine shooting 32 on the back!  The points race didn’t do much this week as both Abbott and Magruder are well back ofGastfield.

A huge thank you goes out to Gyles Robin and the entire staff at The Club at Gateway for having the course in great shape four our event.

Our next event is at Misty Creek Country Club in Sarasota, and it will be on Sunday, July 26.  This will be our second elevated event of the season where we will put $40 per person in the prize pool, and everyone will earn double the points!  Sign up now for your spot to play!  Registration closes on Tuesday, July 21 at 11:59 pm!
