Brown Headlines Strong Field as Amateur Players Tour Nashville Tackles Westhaven Country Club
The Amateur Players Tour Nashville returned to one of Middle Tennessee’s premier venues on June 29 as players from across the region gathered for the APT Nashville Westhaven Golf Club event in Franklin, Tennessee. With temperatures climbing into the summer heat and humidity, competitors faced an exacting test on a golf course presented in exceptional condition. The fast greens, firm fairways, and demanding layout rewarded patience and precision throughout the day, making this Franklin, Tennessee golf tournament one of the most challenging stops on this year’s schedule. The APT Nashville Chapter extends its appreciation to Chris Cauthen, Head Golf Professional at Westhaven Country Club, along with his entire staff, for their outstanding hospitality and for presenting the course in tournament-caliber condition. Their efforts created a memorable day of competitive amateur golf and showcased why Westhaven remains one of the finest venues for golf tournaments in Tennessee.
Division 1
Division 1 produced one of the day’s highest-quality battles, with three players staying within striking distance from the opening tee shot until the final putt. JP Brown proved to be the steadiest player on a demanding golf course, capturing the title at 4-over par.
Brown’s round featured a little bit of everything. He erased an early bogey with birdies on the sixth and seventh holes to move into red numbers before the difficult finishing stretch began to take its toll. Another birdie at the 11th kept him in control, but Westhaven reminded everyone how quickly momentum can change. A double bogey at the 16th briefly opened the door before Brown settled himself avoiding any costly mistakes and finishing with enough separation to secure the victory.
Second place ended in a tie at 6-over between Malik Luckett and Gabe Webb. Luckett got off to an excellent start with birdies on the opening hole and seventh before battling through a stretch of bogeys on the inward nine. He responded with a birdie on the 17th to finish tied for runner-up. Webb took a different path, overcoming early mistakes with birdies at the sixth and 14th while grinding through one of the most difficult back nines of the day. Despite matching Brown’s score entering the closing stretch, a bogey on the final hole left him sharing second.
Division 2
No division featured a tighter finish than Division 2, where four players finished deadlocked at 7-over par after 18 holes. Kevin Ensor ultimately emerged from the playoff to earn the victory after surviving one of the deepest fields of the tournament.
Ensor built his round around timely birdies at Nos. 3, 7 and 18, repeatedly answering bogeys before they could snowball. Although a double bogey on the ninth temporarily stalled his momentum, he never allowed the round to unravel and positioned himself for the playoff with another clutch birdie on the closing hole.
Todd Osinski quietly pieced together one of the steadiest rounds in the field. He avoided major mistakes through the front nine before a birdie on the 12th helped offset a difficult stretch around Nos. 10 and 11. John Hipp recovered impressively from a triple bogey on the opening hole, immediately answering with a birdie on the second and gradually climbing back into contention with disciplined golf over the remaining 16 holes. Tim Ewing’s round was filled with momentum swings, including birdies on the 12th, 14th, 15th and 18th that erased several costly bogeys and earned him a share of the lead entering the playoff.
After four players completed regulation tied atop the leaderboard, Ensor outlasted the field to claim the Division 2 championship.
Division 3
Christian Carpenter separated himself from the field with the most consistent performance of the day, capturing the Division 3 title at 5-over par while everyone else battled simply to stay within reach.
Carpenter never allowed Westhaven’s demanding layout to dictate his round. An early birdie on the second immediately erased any nerves, and although bogeys on the seventh, ninth, 10th, 13th, 15th and 17th threatened to tighten the race, he consistently responded by avoiding the big numbers that plagued much of the field. His ability to limit mistakes ultimately proved to be the difference.
Will Houston and Don Weiss Jr. shared second place at 10-over. Houston faced adversity early with doubles on the third, fifth and 10th holes but kept fighting, closing with birdies on the 12th and 17th to climb back into contention. Weiss authored one of the more volatile rounds of the day, mixing birdies on the third, fifth and 13th with several doubles before finishing tied for runner-up.
Four players shared fourth place at 12-over. Bryan Harwell relied on steady, mistake-free golf despite only one birdie opportunity all day. Madison Murphy recovered from a triple bogey on the seventh with birdies on the 12th, 13th and 17th. Philip DuBose overcame a triple bogey on the fifth by playing even-par golf over much of the back nine before another triple on 17 ended his charge. Wade Williams also finished tied for fourth after surviving a triple bogey on the 12th with birdies on the 13th and a steady finish.
Division 4
David Smith turned in one of the most composed rounds of the tournament to earn the Division 4 championship at 12-over par. Smith mixed an early birdie on the third with another on the opening side before navigating Westhaven’s demanding finishing holes with minimal damage. Even a triple bogey on the 18th couldn’t erase the cushion he had built throughout the afternoon.
Jimmy McGeorge claimed second at 17-over after recovering nicely from a triple bogey on the opening hole. His birdie on the 12th helped keep him comfortably ahead of the rest of the field despite another difficult closing stretch.
Marshall Dean rounded out the podium at 18-over. After opening with consecutive difficult holes, Dean settled into the round and repeatedly battled back, remaining within striking distance before finishing alone in third.
Division 5
Chip Kirkland earned the Division 5 title with a determined performance that rewarded consistency over aggression. Kirkland managed the challenging conditions well, avoiding any disastrous holes while stringing together a series of bogeys that kept him in control. His lone par streak through the middle of the round gave him enough breathing room to withstand the difficult finish and secure the championship at 23-over.
Second place ended in a tie between Dave Dallmer and Rachel Guthrie at 26-over. Dallmer opened with steady golf before battling through a difficult back nine highlighted by a triple bogey on the 12th, yet he remained resilient enough to hold onto a podium finish. Guthrie overcame an early double and responded with a birdie on the fourth, continuing to battle throughout the afternoon despite several challenging stretches on the inward nine to finish tied for runner-up.
Mid-Am Net
David Smith added another trophy to his day by winning the Mid-Am Net competition at 2-under par. His balanced round featured several net birdies while limiting mistakes across Westhaven’s demanding layout. Will Houston finished second at even par, while Malik Luckett claimed third at 2-over after another solid day that included several well-timed net birdies.
Senior Net
The Senior Net division saw Wade Williams earn the victory with an even-par performance. Williams used several net birdies throughout the round to offset a challenging middle stretch and finish atop the standings. Todd Osinski, Don Weiss Jr. and Ken Grisham all shared second place at 1-over, making for another tightly contested finish among the senior competitors.
The Amateur Players Tour Nashville continues to showcase some of the best Tennessee amateur golf, and Westhaven Country Club once again proved to be an outstanding championship venue. Between the demanding course conditions, dramatic leaderboard battles, and strong competition across every division, the event delivered another memorable chapter in the APT Nashville Chapter season and highlighted why Westhaven Golf Club in Franklin, Tennessee remains one of the premier destinations for competitive amateur golf and golf tournament results that matter across the state.
