Mitchell Headlines Strong Performances at APT Nashville Event at WillowBrook Golf Club
MANCHESTER, Tenn. — Summer heat settled over WillowBrook Golf Club on Saturday as the Amateur Players Tour Nashville chapter returned to action for one of its final tune-ups before the upcoming elevated event at Westhaven Golf Club. Temperatures climbed throughout the day and humidity made its presence known, but favorable course conditions at the Manchester, Tennessee golf tournament created plenty of scoring opportunities for competitors. The enthusiastic field took advantage, producing red numbers, close finishes and another memorable chapter in Tennessee amateur golf.
Division 1
Division 1 produced the low round of the day as Matt Mitchell captured the title with an impressive 5-under-par performance. With the event utilizing a shotgun start, Mitchell began his round on the fifth hole and wasted little time making his move. Despite a double bogey on the sixth, he quickly recovered with birdies at Nos. 7, 10 and 12 to turn momentum back in his favor.
Mitchell continued his charge with birdies at 18, 1, 2 and 3 provided a strong finish to his day to close out a four-shot victory. His ability to immediately rebound from adversity proved to be the difference.
Austin Vasquez, John Cacchio and recent Bear Trace at Tims Ford champion Nathan Calahan shared second place at 1-under.
Starting on the sixth hole, Vasquez played his opening stretch in steady fashion before catching fire on the back side. Birdies at Nos. 7, 9, 10, 12, 14 and 16 kept him in contention throughout the round, though a costly double bogey at the 13th ultimately prevented him from challenging Mitchell.
Cacchio also began on No. 6 and quietly assembled one of the steadiest rounds in the field. Birdies at Nos. 7, 11 and 14 were offset by bogeys on Nos. 4 and 5, allowing him to finish tied for second.
Calahan, fresh off his playoff victory two weeks earlier at Bear Trace at Tims Ford, started on the sixth hole and found himself under par through much of the day. Still, the defending Tims Ford winner posted another solid finish for the APT Nashville chapter.
Division 2
Tim Ewing continued his consistent season with a two-shot victory at 2-over par. Beginning his round on the third hole, Ewing methodically navigated WillowBrook’s challenges and remained remarkably steady throughout the day.
His lone birdie came on the 18th hole, capping a round that featured just three bogeys and fifteen pars. That consistency proved enough to separate him from Ken Washington, who finished second at 5-over.
Washington opened on the first tee and battled through an up-and-down round. Birdies on Nos. 5, 7, 10 and 15 helped offset several big numbers, but a triple bogey on the sixth hole ultimately proved too costly as Ewing claimed another Division 2 title.
Division 3
Bryan Harwell emerged victorious in a tightly contested Division 3 race with a round of 5-over par.
Starting on the sixth hole, Harwell played his opening stretch in even par before gaining momentum late in the round. Birdies at Nos. 1 and 18 helped him separate from a crowded leaderboard and secure a one-shot victory.
Three players finished tied for second at 6-over.
Dusty Nowlin, who started on the third hole, remained in contention all day and made a key birdie at the 13th. Philip DuBose, beginning on No. 4, battled back with a birdie on the 18th to join the tie for second. Justin Gassmann, starting on the 18th hole, was under control for much of the day before a triple bogey on the 17th derailed what had been an outstanding round.
The one-shot margin highlighted just how competitive Division 3 was from start to finish.
Division 4
Bruce Gordon put together a resilient performance to capture the Division 4 title with a score of 10-over par.
Beginning on the 15th hole, Gordon played his first nine holes in 4-over before making the turn and settling into a rhythm. A birdie on the second hole provided a spark and helped him maintain his advantage over the field.
Micah Rodriguez finished runner-up at 11-over. Starting alongside Gordon on No. 15, Rodriguez fought back from a challenging middle stretch and had a birdie on the 18th to finish just one stroke behind.
Aaron Hobbs, Joe Berry and David Smith shared third place at 13-over. Hobbs began on the second hole and mixed a birdie with several pars to remain in the hunt, while Berry’s birdie on the second highlighted a roller-coaster day. Smith stayed remarkably steady before consecutive triples late in the round kept him from climbing higher.
Division 5
Peter Ko claimed Division 5 honors with a 14-over-par round.
Starting on the 13th hole, Ko opened with steady play before making the turn and producing one of his best stretches of the day. A birdie at the fifth hole and a collection of pars allowed him to edge Robert Rosenbaum and Mike Osbourn by one stroke.
Rosenbaum, who also began on No. 13, mixed birdies and doubles throughout the day to share second at 15-over. Osbourn, starting on the 14th hole, remained within striking distance all afternoon and joined Rosenbaum in the runner-up position.
Mid-Am Net
Dusty Nowlin added another trophy to his day by winning the Mid-Am Net division at 4-under net. Kevin Smith and Peter Ko tied for second at 3-under net in another competitive battle.
Senior Net
The Senior Net competition ended in a tie between Charlie Barrett and Wade Williams at 5-under net. Williams claimed the trophy through a scorecard playoff, while Bryan Harwell finished third at 4-under net.
Looking Ahead
The Amateur Players Tour Nashville chapter now shifts its attention to one of the premier events of the season. Westhaven Golf Club in Franklin will host the next elevated event on Monday, June 29, bringing another opportunity for players to earn valuable points in the season standings.
Registration remains open, but players are encouraged to sign up early. Elevated events have consistently drawn strong fields, and spots are expected to fill quickly as the summer schedule for APT Nashville continues to heat up.
