Drama, Playoffs, and Breakthrough Victory Highlight the APT Open at Los Verdes Golf Club
PALOS VERDES, CA — Spectacular coastal views met fiercely competitive golf at Los Verdes Golf Club as players across five divisions battled for hardware at the Amateur Players Tour Open. From debut victories and clutch down-the-stretch finishes to sudden-death playoff drama, the tournament delivered high-stakes action from start to finish.
Division 1: Debut Winner Takes Top Honors
In Division 1, the APT’s newest member Louis DePiro made an immediate statement in his tour debut. Displaying incredible poise and ball-striking precision, he carded an even-par 71 to claim his very first Amateur Players Tour victory. Michael Mabashov put together a strong performance of his own, firing a 3-over 74 to claim sole possession of second place.
Division 2: Playoff Drama at the Top
Division 2 provided the most dramatic finish of the afternoon, as Thomas Crowder and Mark Iriarte found themselves deadlocked at the top of the leaderboard after matching rounds of 75. The pair headed back out for a sudden-death playoff to crown a champion. On the first playoff hole, Mark reached the green in 2 on the par-5 hole, putting some pressure on Thomas. Thomas pulled out 3W and hit it to the back side of the green, leaving him with a 50 ft eagle putt and Mark with a 20 ft eagle putt. Thomas was trying to lag it close and instead watched in go in for eagle and the victory for Division 2!! Wow, what a putt! Diego Soto pushed the leaders all the way to the wire, finishing just one stroke out of the playoff with a solid 76 to claim third place.
Division 3: Jellsey Closes Out First Div 3 Win on 18
The tightest division race of the day unfolded in Division 3, where Kenneth Chapman (Utah), Nico Romero (Fullerton, CA), and Zack Jellsey (Eastvale, CA) went toe-to-toe in a battle that wasn’t decided until the final hole. With all three players neck-and-neck heading down the 18th fairway, Jellsey delivered in the clutch—draining a pressure-packed par to close out a 78. The victory marked Zack’s first-ever Amateur Players Tour win in Division 3, edging out Chapman by a single shot and Romero by two who took third.
Division 4: Odegard Stays Hot
Kurt Odegard added another trophy to his collection with another dominant performance in Division 4. Odegard carded a steady 82 to take top honors once again, staying clear of runner-up Vic Lopez, who posted an 85 to earn second place. Marty Rhinehart was in contention and took a double bogey on 18 that ended up costing him. Marty did end up second in the senior net with his good round.
Division 5: Weatherby Fires Lowest Div 5 Round of the Season
Division 5 saw history made as Tommy Weatherby put together his best round of the year. Weatherby fired a remarkable 85—the lowest Division 5 round recorded on tour this season—to secure a comfortable three-stroke victory. Guest player Rick Padilla of San Pedro, CA, put up a commendable effort, taking second place with a round of 88.
