Heat, Drama, and Playoff Thrills at the Tijeras Creek Elevated Event
What began as a gorgeous summer morning quickly turned into a scorching, high-stakes battle on the coast for the Tijeras Creek Elevated Event on August 1st. With elevated points on the line, players across all five divisions fought through the heat down to the final greens.
Division 1: Giron’s Ice-Cold Finish
The premier division delivered a thrilling finish that came down to the 18th hole. Leonardo Giron (Chula Vista, CA) and Berkecem Renda (Fullerton, CA) went toe-to-toe all day. After Renda misplayed his approach shot into the final green—leading to a costly bogey—Giron seized the moment, draining a stunning 30-foot birdie putt to seal the victory. With the elevated points from this win, Giron may have officially broken into the Top 4 in Division 1, putting him in prime position for a spot on the Southwest Cup team.
Division 2: A Three-Hole Playoff Showdown
Division 2 saw heavy action throughout the round, with Jayson Huett, Evan Leonard, and Andres Viramontes (Murrieta, CA) remaining within one or two shots of each other all day. Meanwhile, Northern California’s AJ Quintero flew down to test his skills against the Southern California field—and he didn’t disappoint. Powered by three back-nine birdies, Quintero needed a par on the 18th to secure the victory.
Although he made his par, a one-shot discrepancy on the digital leaderboard meant Quintero tied with Jayson Huett, sending the pair into a sudden-death playoff. After three intense extra holes, Quintero emerged as the champion, earning his tour membership and the coveted decanter trophy. Huett took home a well-earned second place, while Viramontes finished third and Evan Leonard fourth.
Division 3: Clutch Putting in Extra Holes
The leaderboard in Division 3 was a revolving door featuring Blake Moorman, Sean Michael, Will Kamp, and Keith Manchester (Garden Grove, CA).
- Will Kamp set the early mark in the clubhouse with a solid 81.
- Sean Michael, playing several groups back, leapfrogged into the lead after posting a 77.
- Blake Moorman, the last contender on the course, scraped together a clutch par on the 18th to force the second playoff of the day.
On the second playoff hole, Moorman sank a high-pressure 16-foot par putt. When Michael’s response missed, Moorman secured the Division 3 Championship and the $380 top prize.
Division 4: Forsyth Holds Off Rising Contenders
Division 4 has been defined by a season-long rivalry between Kurt Odegard and Brad Forsyth, but Royce Jiang and Barret Miller (Orange, CA) crashed the party on August 1st.
Miller put together a strong performance to tie Odegard for third place, while Jiang posted a great round of 83 to claim runner-up honors. However, it was Brad Forsyth who mastered the conditions, bringing home an 80 to take first place and reinforce his dominance.
Division 5: Desai Outlasts the Field
Division 5 welcomed back Ronak Desai (Irvine, CA) to the tour stage. Desai sprinted out to a comfortable lead for most of the round, though David Cavanaugh mounted a furious late charge to keep things tight coming down the stretch.
Ultimately, Desai held his nerve to post a 91, narrowly edging out Cavanaugh’s 92 by a single stroke to take home the trophy and the $240 winner’s payout.
