2027 ATL Braelinn Golf Club

[read_time]

The Atlanta Amateur Players Tour opened its 2027 season on Sunday, October 11th at Braelinn Golf Club, and the chapter’s first stop of the new year turned into one of the best days of Atlanta amateur golf tournaments you will find on a fall Sunday. A field of 57 players competed across five divisions, with two net games running alongside the gross contests. Players are flighted into divisions based on their APT Tournament Index.

Braelinn Golf Club gave the field a par-72 test, and the finish had teeth. The par-4 18th surrendered exactly one birdie across 56 players and played better than a shot and a half over par, meaning nobody walked to the last with anything handed to them.

Division 1 produced the low round of the day. Jack Stein, visiting from the Memphis chapter and playing out of Coral Gables, Florida, posted an even-par 72 to take medalist honors by a single stroke. Stein turned in 1-over 37 and then came home in 1-under 35, picking up birdies at the par-5 10th and the par-5 17th and making 14 pars along the way. David Walterhouse of Roswell gave chase and fell one short, signing for a 1-over 73 that included the day’s only eagle, made at the par-5 7th — the most generous hole on the property, which also gave up seven birdies. Walterhouse covered the inward nine in even-par 36 to earn runner-up honors. David Steed of Forsyth and Joe Brooks of Franklin, North Carolina shared third at 2-over 74, Steed making a division-high four birdies and Brooks closing his last three holes in 2-under. Four players finished within two of the lead.

Division 2 needed more than 18 holes to decide a champion. Caleb Smith of Williamson, Georgia and James Teston of Macon both signed for 8-over 80, and Smith came through the playoff for the title. Smith’s round was built on patience — 14 pars in all, and he played the closing six holes in even par to force the extra holes. Teston went out in 5-over 41 and home in 3-over 39, with birdies at the par-5 7th and the par-4 16th. Behind them, three players bunched at 9-over 81: Adam Leys of Covington, Charles Long of Monticello, who birdied the par-4 3rd and the par-5 17th, and Hendre Van Der Watt of West Point, who got home in 2-over 38. Seven players finished within two shots of the lead in the tightest division of the day.

Division 3 also went to sudden death. John Perron and Soup Campbell, both of Dallas, Georgia, tied at 8-over 80 and Perron took the trophy in the playoff. Perron’s card showed 12 pars, and he turned a 6-over 42 start into a 2-over 38 finish. Campbell’s day ran the other direction in the best way: out in 7-over 43, back in 1-over 37, with birdies at the par-5 7th, the par-5 10th and the par-4 15th. Eric King of Acworth finished third at 12-over 84 to round out the money positions.

In Division 4, Gary Barth of Cumming held off the field by a single stroke, going out in 9-over 45 and home in 8-over 44 for a 17-over 89. Paul Kattookaran of Marietta took runner-up honors at 18-over 90. Three players shared third at 19-over 91 — Joshua Williams of Columbus, Mac Parisay of Acworth and Tony Monteiro of Douglasville — with five players in all finishing within two of Barth’s winning number.

Division 5 belonged to Mitchell McDannald of Fayetteville, whose 19-over 91 was good for a five-shot win. Bruce Reeves, in from the Upstate South Carolina chapter, was second at 24-over 96, and Ed Alcock of Cumming and Richard Kemp of Dallas, Georgia tied for third at 27-over 99.

The Mid-Am Net game went to Stein as well, his net even-par 72 edging Teston’s net 1-over 73 by a stroke. Teston’s second-place finish there made it two runner-up results on the day after his playoff loss in Division 2. Joshua Williams and Mitchell McDannald tied for third at net 2-over 74, McDannald completing the double-dip after his Division 5 victory. Nine players finished within five of the lead.

Senior Net produced the lowest net number of the afternoon. Soup Campbell turned his Division 3 runner-up round into a net 3-under 69 and a three-shot win, completing a profitable double-dip. Joe Brooks and John Perron shared second at net even-par 72, Perron adding the runner-up check to his Division 3 title.

Next up in the Atlanta chapter — a trip to Butternut Creek Golf Course on Saturday, October 17th. Space is limited and registration closes October 12th. Brookstone Country Club follows on Monday, November 2nd, with registration there closing October 26th.
