Tournament Champions
For players searching for Charleston SC amateur golf tournaments or Lowcountry golf events, the Charleston Amateur Players Tour teed it up Sunday at the Plantation Course at Edisto in Edisto Island, South Carolina.
The chapter opened its 2027 season on Sunday, October 25th with 38 players across five divisions, with the Mid-Am Net and Senior Net games running alongside. Players are flighted into divisions based on their APT Tournament Index, and the tee sheet drew entries from well beyond the Lowcountry.
The Plantation Course at Edisto plays to a par of 70, and it asked its hardest questions early. The opening par 4 was the toughest hole on the property, averaging 1.78 strokes over par across 37 plays and surrendering only two birdies all day. The par-4 13th was the most generous, playing 0.62 over par with three birdies and 14 pars.
Division 2 produced the tightest finish of the morning. Steve Smyth of Edisto Island, South Carolina took top honors with a 9-over 79, a single stroke clear of Chuck Bell of Barnwell, South Carolina at 10-over 80. Smyth led through six and through twelve, but the division turned on the closing stretch: with three holes to play both Bell and Allen Hall had edged a shot in front of him. Smyth played those last three in 1-over to reclaim it, going out in 5-over 40 and home in 4-over 39 with nine pars and a birdie at the par-5 5th. Bell matched that inward 4-over 39 and picked up a birdie at the par-4 15th. Hall, of Johns Island, South Carolina, finished in a share of third at 12-over 82 alongside Mike Hubert of Evans, Georgia and Weston Brown of Gaffney, South Carolina. Hubert made the best repair job of anyone in the division, turning in 10-over 45 before coming home in 2-over 37 with a birdie at that accommodating par-4 13th. Brown birdied the brutal opening par 4 — one of only two players in the field to do it — and added another at the par-5 18th. Six players finished within five of the lead.
Alfred Meggett of Blythewood, South Carolina was the class of the field in Division 3 and posted the low round of the day, an 8-over 78 that held up by three strokes. Meggett was actually a shot behind both Jeff Price and Chris Huge through six holes before taking control on the middle stretch, and he never gave the lead back. His card was a model of consistency: 4-over 39 going out, 4-over 39 coming home, 11 pars and a birdie at the par-4 9th. Price, of Edisto Island, South Carolina, finished second at 11-over 81 with a birdie at the par-3 6th. Huge, who made the trip over from the Myrtle Beach chapter and lives in Mount Pleasant, took third at 12-over 82 after a birdie at the par-5 5th and an inward 5-over 40.
Division 4 went to extra holes. Rick Battaglia and Thomas Hart, both of Edisto Island, South Carolina, signed for matching rounds of 20-over 90, and Battaglia came through the playoff to claim the division. Getting there took some doing. Hart was two in front after six and stretched that to five through twelve, still four clear with three holes to play. Battaglia, who went out in 12-over 47 and home in 8-over 43, played the final three in 1-over to force the tie. Ken Steele of Lexington, South Carolina, visiting from the Augusta chapter, finished a stroke outside the playoff at 21-over 91. Three players finished within two of the lead.
Division 5 also needed a tiebreaker. Randy Cox of Ravenel, South Carolina and Henry Bush of Pooler, Georgia both finished on 29-over 99, with Cox taking the division in the playoff. Bush had the better of it early, four clear of Cox after six holes, but Cox had drawn level by the twelfth and the two traded the advantage over the closing holes. Brendan Daniels of Summerville, South Carolina and Phillip Bush, also of Pooler, Georgia, shared third at 30-over 100. Five players finished within two strokes of one another at the top of the division.
In Division 1, Seth Spivey of Cross, South Carolina carded a 22-over 92 to take the division.
The Mid-Am Net belonged to Allen Hall of Johns Island, South Carolina, whose net 3-over 73 was good for a four-stroke win. Weston Brown had been two in front of Hall after six holes and was still level with him at the turn of the twelfth, but Hall pulled away over the closing stretch and Brown settled for second at net 7-over 77. William Klauss of Hanahan, South Carolina took third at net 9-over 79. Hall and Brown had earlier shared third place in Division 2, making it a productive morning for both.
The Senior Net drew the largest entry of the day at 19 players and produced the smallest margin. Chris Huge of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina posted net 1-over 71 to win by a single stroke over Mike Hubert of Evans, Georgia at net 2-over 72. It was not comfortable: Jeff Price of Edisto Island, South Carolina was three strokes to the good with three holes to play before Huge finished the job, and Hubert was level with the eventual winner from the twelfth hole onward. Price took third at net 3-over 73, backing up his runner-up finish in Division 3. Big Al Reynolds of West Columbia, South Carolina and Rick Battaglia of Edisto Island, South Carolina tied for fourth at net 6-over 76 to round out the money positions. Thirteen players finished within seven shots of the lead, which tells the story of how bunched the contest was.
Battaglia’s day was the most productive on the property — a playoff win in Division 4 and a share of fourth in the Senior Net.
The Charleston chapter competes across the Lowcountry — Mount Pleasant, Summerville, North Charleston, Johns Island, Kiawah and Edisto Island — with five gross divisions plus the Mid-Am Net and Senior Net games at every stop. Sunday’s field also included players from the Augusta, Upstate South Carolina and Myrtle Beach chapters, with Hubert, Steele and Reynolds in from Augusta, Brown from Upstate and Huge from Myrtle Beach.
Next up in the Charleston chapter — a trip to Legend Oaks on March 20th.
