For players searching for Denver amateur golf tournaments or premier Front Range golf events, the Amateur Players Tour opened its 2027 season on Saturday, October 3rd at the City Park 2027 Season Opener at City Park Golf Course in Denver, Colorado. A field of 52 players across five gross divisions and two net games put the first points of the new season on the board, and by late afternoon the chapter had its first winners of the year in the books.

City Park measures out at a par of 70 over its 18 holes, a layout that asks for position off the tee and rewards a player who can take advantage of the par 5s — the 9th, the 13th and the 16th — rather than simply overpower the property. The card’s five par 3s and the short, tempting par 4s give a sharp player somewhere to go low, and on Saturday one man found every one of those doors.

In Division 1, Philip Camillo went low early and often. The Denver player turned in 1-under 33 and then came home in 3-under 33 for a 4-under 66, the low round of the day by any player in the field. His card held six birdies against just two bogeys and no double bogeys anywhere — he opened with a birdie at the par-4 1st, added another at the par-4 6th and picked up the par-5 9th to make the turn under par, then closed with birdies at the par-5 13th, the par-5 16th and the par-3 17th to play his final six holes in 3-under. Austin Mareck took runner-up honors five back at 1-over 71, a round built on a 2-under 34 on the inward half with birdies at the 13th and the par-4 15th after an outward 3-over 37. Mike Synek of Littleton was a shot further adrift at 2-over 72, and his round was the cleanest of the three in one respect: ten pars, three birdies and not a single double bogey, with birdies at the 13th and the par-4 14th carrying him home in 1-under 35.

Division 2 produced the most arresting nine of the morning. Hendrik Orlowski of Parker played the front in 3-under 31, birdieing the par-4 4th, the par-4 6th, the par-4 7th and the par-5 9th, and although the back nine came back at him for a 7-over 43, the cushion he had built was never seriously threatened. His 4-over 74 held on by two strokes. Gary Wayne of Highlands Ranch pushed him hardest, reaching the turn in 2-over 36 and adding birdies at the par-4 10th, the par-3 12th and the par-5 16th on the way to a 6-over 76 to round out the money positions. Behind them the division bunched up — five players finished within five shots of the lead — with Brett Miller of Castle Rock and Travis Rhuby of Centennial sharing third at 8-over 78.

Division 3 came down to a single stroke. Ke Zhao of Aurora ground out the win with the steadiest card of the group, eleven pars and only one blemish worse than a bogey, turning in 2-over 36 before a 6-over 42 home for an 8-over 78. Evan Wilking of Lakewood and Jeremy Mortensen of Colorado Springs shared second at 9-over 79. Wilking’s was the more eventful route — five birdies, at the 1st, the 6th, the 9th, the 13th and the 16th, and a closing six holes played in even par that very nearly caught the leader. Mortensen got there the opposite way, with eleven pars and no birdies at all, a 5-over 39 out and a 4-over 40 back. Three players finished within two shots of the top in the chapter’s deepest gross division.

Division 4 belonged to Jeff Jackson, the Denver player posting a 15-over 85 built on seven pars, a 7-over 41 to the turn and an 8-over 44 coming in, good for a two-shot win. William Boortz, also of Denver, was next at 17-over 87 to round out the money positions. Three players then tied for third at 18-over 88: Addie Berube of Littleton, who played her last three holes in 1-over; Richard McCoy of Lakewood, who repaired an 11-over 45 start with a 7-over 43 on the back; and Van Rubick of Colorado Springs.

Division 5 went to Michael Elder of Commerce City, whose 20-over 90 included six pars and a tidy 2-over finish through the last three holes after a 9-over 43 outward and an 11-over 47 inward. Cody Canzona of Aurora claimed runner-up honors, his lone birdie of the day arriving at the par-5 13th, and Geoffrey Acton of Pueblo was third at 30-over 100.

The Mid-Am Net game put Philip Camillo back in the Winners Circle a second time. His net 4-under 66 took the title by two strokes and completed the double-dip alongside his Division 1 victory — the only player on the property to win twice. Evan Wilking backed up his Division 3 result with a net 2-under 68 for runner-up honors, and Hendrik Orlowski added a net 1-over 71 to his Division 2 win to round out the money positions in a field where seven players finished within seven shots of the lead.

Senior Net was settled by two strokes in favor of Mike Foxhoven of Aurora, whose net 1-under 69 was the product of nine pars and only two holes worse than a bogey, a 5-over 39 on the front and a 6-over 42 on the back. Travis Rhuby of Centennial and Van Rubick of Colorado Springs tied for second at net 1-over 71 apiece, with three players finishing within two shots of the title.

With the 2027 season now underway and the first Player of the Year points distributed, the Denver chapter stays on the move next Saturday, October 10th, for the Bella Ridge Golf Club 2027 Season ELEVATED, the chapter’s first Elevated Event of the new season.
