Warm temperatures, blue skies, and a light breeze made an awesome course even better. The Golf Club at Creekmoor is highly regarded as one of if not the best public golf course in the Kansas City Metro, and players today found out why. Pure greens that rolled true, pristine fairways and tee boxes, and despite a bit of a drought, rough that will rival the thickest in the city. Fairways are a premium out here, and those who found them, were able to put some good scores together.
Division 1 looked to be a runaway early, with Adam Shaecher out of Omaha easing out of the gates, seeing some of the other players struggle with the course a bit. Larry Langley decided to not make it easy on him though. Larry was 6 over par after 6 holes, while Adam remained steady around even. Larry started posting some birdies, and in the end, Adam had to hold on to prevent Larry from repeating out here. Adam ended up shooting a 2 over par 74, to best Larry by 1 shot, and get his first win on the APT.
David Sandvig said this was the best golf he’s played all year, but that could be chalked up to low expectations as he hadn’t played an individual stroke play event since high school. Low expectations can sometimes calm the nerves, and David played with a sense of calm that kept his head in the game. But Travis Foxx, a player who keeps showing up at the top of the leaderboard, wasn’t going to give it to him easily. They both battled it out, with it coming down to one stroke, but Sandvig took the win shooting a remarkable 3 over par 75.
Nate Van de Voorde played the round of his life, including a hole out eagle on the difficult par 5 9th hole, from about 75 yards out. Nate is a recent graduate to D3, and looks like he might have finally found his groove. Paul Stanton out of Oklahoma, Ron Dyer from Lees Summit and Terrance Barrios weren’t going down without a fight. With a jammed up leaderboard, Nate was able to hold off the others and take a 1 stroke win over Paul Stanton. Ron Dyer took 3rd.
James Fenton said it felt crazy today, that he couldn’t miss for the first 7 holes. Cup must have looked like a trash can because the guy was on absolute fire, taking a big early lead on the division 4 field. Creekmoor has a way of waking you up from that dream though, and it did just that. Luckily he had built up a solid lead, and shot a still very good round of 81 to win by 6 over Jeff Rader.
Casey Wise is up there again, with another solid win in D5! Cliff Austin II was in a close second place, but one errant shot out here can easily mean 2-3 strokes, and Casey was able to keep it together just a bit better to shoot a 94 and beat Cliff by 4 strokes.
Ron Dyer, who took 3rd in D3, said it was the best he’d ever struck a golf ball, just couldn’t get putts to fall. But that didn’t stop him from posting a great number, and taking home top honors in the Senior Net game with a 4 under par.
