The Amateur Players Tour-Atlanta Chapter hosted an event on July 15th, 2023 at Chapel Hills Golf Club in Douglasville, GA. Chapel Hills had firm and fast fairways with receptive greens that rolled true. Thank you to JT Mass and your staff at Chapel Hills for allowing us to showcase your facility to our membership.
Division 1 looked to be a runaway for Brandon Blanchard through ten holes as the lead was four shots at -3. Derek Nicholson and Mike Weathers were both behind Brandon but struggles down the stretch and timely birdies for Mike and Derek changed the day. Mike and Derek both stood on the 18th tee tied atop the leaderboard and both made pars. Mike Weathers was eventually awarded the trophy and the $210 prize for the victory.
Division 2 followed the same trend as James Davisa played the first fifteen holes at -3. James struggled down the stretch playing the final three in +4. Matthew Greene knew that it’s not over till its over and gave himself a chance on the par 5, 18th hole from just over twenty feet. The putt slipped just to the right of the hole and James was able to hold on for the victory. James was awarded the trophy and the $230 prize for the victory.
Division 3 was a two-horse race between Brent Moore and James Metcalfe. After nine holes both players were tied atop the leaderboard. Brent had an up and down back nine with two birdies but made an untimely double bogey and the par 5, 14th hole. This opened the door for James to play consistent back nine with six pars and only three bogies. James was awarded the trophy and the $150 Visa Gift Card.
Division 4 kept with the trend of good scoring throughout the event. Mike Penn posted an 81 to take a five-shot victory over Alan Campbell. Although Alan finished second in the event, Alan used birdies and closest to the pin victories to rack up over $220 in total prizes on the day. Mike was awarded the trophy and $230 Visa Gift Card.
Division 5 has a first-time winner on the APT. Robert Kidd was able to outlast Michael Mcmillian to bring home the victory and the $180 prize pool. Robert took advantage of the driveable par 4, 15h and made birdie to pull ahead of Michael. Michael battled back and gave himself a chance on the final hole but a shot that ended up in the water secured the win for Robert.
Next up for the Atlanta Chapter is the APT Summer Shootout at Seqoyah National Golf Club. This event is a National Major and Atlanta has thirteen total players representing. Good Luck and bring home another National Major Champion.
