Clubs of Kingwood Forest Course
Houston’s Amateur Players Tour returned to Kingwood’s Forest Course for first time since last season with early-week concerns about Tropical Storm Bertha possibly soaking the area. The weather ended up with clear skies, hot, and dry conditions. With the season nearing its finale, players were ready for a challenging day and several divisions delivered tight finishes and dramatic playoffs.
Division 1
Mark Young set the early pace with an even-par 36 on the front nine, taking a one-shot lead over Jarrod Brown at +1 (37). Brown responded with three birdies on the back nine, firing a 1-under 35 to surge ahead and claim the victory at even-par 72.
Division 2
Jason Hollis opened strong with a +1 (37), holding a two-shot advantage over Darien Duhon at +3 (39). Hollis maintained control on the back nine, posting +6 (42) to secure the win with a +7 (79).
Division 3
Joseph Sawyer led after the front nine with a +6 (42), just one shot ahead of Tyler Marino at +7 (43). As the round unfolded, Jeff Roberts and Jack Anderson worked their way up the leaderboard while the leaders battled. A chip-in eagle by Sawyer on 17 forced a playoff with Marino. The playoff began on hole #1. Sawyer found the fairway, while Marino pushed his tee shot right but recovered brilliantly over the trees to within 10 yards of the green. Sawyer chipped to two feet and converted for par to secure the victory.
Division 4
The second largest division featured a tight contest throughout the day. Jay Alaniz held a narrow lead at +5 (41), followed closely by Steve Crumpton at +6 (42). Jason Reavis made a strong charge on the back nine, highlighted by a birdie on 11, finishing with a +15 (87) to tie Alaniz and force a playoff. On the first playoff hole, Alaniz pulled his tee shot left and, after a penalty, recovered with a strong chip to tie the hole. On hole #2, Reavis caught a fortunate break off the left trees and found the fairway, while Alaniz drove it well but found a greenside bunker with his approach shot. Reavis nearly holed out his third shot and tapped in for par to win the playoff.
Division 5
The largest field of the day saw another competitive battle. Muhammad Qadir led early with a +8 (44), followed by Tom Tribble at +10 (46). Don Hamblett surged from behind with three pars on the back nine and a birdie on 17, posting a +18 (90) to claim the win. Qadir and Tribble finished tied for second at +20 (92).
