The Iowa Chapter of the Amateur Players Tour held their eighth event of the season Sunday July 18th, 2021, at Finkbine Golf Course, the current home of the Iowa Hawkeyes. After several weeks of rain, the course was in excellent condition with lush fairways and firm and fast greens. The temperature was in the upper 80’s with a steady cooling breeze from 5-10 mph. One could not ask for a better day for golf in Iowa. Thirty-two players were there to take on this challenging course and by the end of the day we had our winners.
Division one winner Kyle Yerington (80) was able to hold off Joe Larson (87) and capture his second APT win of the season. Yerington’s seven stroke victory may seem like a walk in the park at first glance, however, Larson started strong, firing a 41 on the front leaving him only 2 strokes behind Yerington at the turn. On the back nine Larson struggled to find the fairway, this led to a string of bogey’s that made the deficit too much to overcome.
Division two had a loaded field with several familiar faces and a few new ones. The high number of players did not deter division 2 winner Charlie Estabrook (76). Estabrook came out of the gate on fire, posting an eagle on the first hole. From that point on Eastabrook never relinquished the lead finishing with a 5-stroke lead over Jeremy Beelman (81).
In just his second Apt event Chad Beavers (85) was able to pull out a one stroke victory in division three over Peter Alepra (86). Beavers made the turn posting a 43 putting him one stroke ahead of Alepra who had posted a 44 at the turn. Coming in both players were neck and neck both posting a 42 on the back giving Beavers his first Apt victory.
In just his fourth Apt event, division four winner Jeremey Albert (80) is facing his second promotion after posting an impressive 8 over at Finkbine. Alberts dominated the competition with a 7-stroke lead over second place Mitchell Gustin (87). Albert continues to improve his game by continuously posting good scores moving his tour index to 11.6 which will likely lead to a promotion to division three.
Division five winner Linda Bozada (100) of the St. Louis chapter was able to hold off some close competition by beating Iowa’s own Dirk Hamel (101) by one stroke. Bozada was able to hold off Hamel who was surging on the back and posted a score that was five strokes better than on his front nine. It wasn’t enough for Hamel to come back for the win though.
