The Ole Miss Golf Course in Oxford, MS and Tunica National Golf Club in Tunica, MS welcomed he Memphis/Mid-South APT to town for the final two day event of the season before the two day tour finals. The weather cooperated for the field of 25 players competing for the final push of Player of the Year Points.
Ed McDugle used rounds of 68 (-4) at the Ole Miss Course and 73 (+1) at Tunica National to hold off Cary Anderson’s 73 (+1) and 74 (+2) to win Division 1. McDugle started the Sunday round +2 through 4 holes and used a run of 6 birdies in his last 14 holes to jump to a 2 shot day one lead over Mel Davis’ 70 (-2). Anderson made his run on Monday with a great round of 73 but wasn’t quite enough to catch McDugle’s consistency.
In Division 2, Russ Brasel came out strong on Sunday playing his last 4 holes at four under par, including an eagle on the par 5 15th hole and closing birdies on #s 17 and 18. Carrying a 4 shot lead into Monday at Tunica, Brassel found himself struggling while Nashville’s Marcus Wirth played as steady of a round of golf of anyone on the day. Wirth’s first round 81 (+9) would be long forgotten as he made clutch putt after clutch putt on Monday to fire a 74 (+2) and pull out the 4 shot win. Memphis’ Paul Luker finished 2nd firing 82-77 for the weekend.
Division 3 saw Birmingham Chapter Owner Russ Donaldson come out strong on day one at the Ole Miss Course setting the pace with a +4 (76) and a comfortable 8 shot lead. Monday’s round of 82 was enough for Donaldson to hold off Memphis’ Jon Sylvester by 12 strokes for the win.
Division 4 saw a close battle headed into the final round. On Sunday at the OMGC Memphis’ Kevin Brown shot a +9 (81) while Bradley Ashmore fired a +11 (83). The two shot lead was the extent of the lead until the very end of the day on Monday when Brown found a way to fend off Ashmore for a 3 shot victory.
Division 5 saw Arthur Miller, Jr do his best Will Zalatoris performance. The two players have a history of close calls, finishing second multiple times this season. On the same weekend Zalatoris ended his quest for a win, Miller also ended his quest firing rounds of 89-96 to win by 6 shots over Atlanta’s Tim Harbin.
We also have a special congrats going out to our newest member Jeff Crane on his best round of the year in any round. Jeff’s +8 (80) was an incredible performance from the D5 player. It’s very unfortunate that such a great round resulted in a HDCP related DQ but we are all proud of Jeff for his performance.
Also, a HUGE thank you to Corby King and Adam Matthews of King’s Steakhouse and The Daquiri Barn for providing our food for lunch on Sunday. We also appreciate the hospitality of the staff at King’s for accommodating us for dinner on Saturday night.
Our final thanks go out to Tate Anderson and Matt Jennings of the Ole Miss Course along with their entire staff for helping us put on a great event Sunday. David Cade and Art at Tunica National also did an exceptional job Monday getting our final round in for us!
The Memphis/Mid-South APT has 2 events left. Monday, August 29th at Colonial Country Club in Memphis and September 17-18 for our Tour Championship at Fair Oaks in Oakland, TN. We look forward to seeing everyone to close out a great season!
