The Iowa Tristate Chapter of the APT held its second play off event at Tournament Club of Iowa in Polk City Iowa on August 29th, 2020. It was a great day for golf with the temperatures in the mid-80s and a steady breeze. There were some close competitions in each division, resulting in a one stroke victory in division 3 and a one-hole playoff in division five. Here are your division winners:
Division one winner Joe Larsen had his division win sealed up before he ever stepped on the course since he was the only one in his division. So, he was able to cruise to victory.
Our division two winner Charlie Estabrook took victory today by shooting a 39 on the front and back. The front 9 being where he was able to keep his lead over Dale Morrison and the rest of his division. Making this his second Apt win.
Division 3 had some close competition for the top 3 spots. It came down to hole 18 to find who would be the victor. Coming into 18 Peter Alepra and Darin Smith were tied for first and Paul Schmitz was only 2 strokes behind. Darin ended up getting a triple on 18 which gave Peter Alepra his first APT victory and Paul Schmitz made an impressive birdie putt which gave him second place today.
Division 4 winner Roger Bales (91) relied on his consistent play for his three-stroke victory. Bales posted a +10 on the front and back for a three-stroke victory over second place finisher Mike Murry (94). Murry struggled on the front 9 posting a 51 but made a valiant effort on the back posting a 43.
Division 5 was full of excitement coming down to a one-hole playoff between Steve Koch and David Clay, both posting a 103 for the round. Koch defeated Clay on the playoff hole after making an impressive comeback on the back 9. Clay had a three-stroke lead at the turn posting a 52, however, at the turn Koch caught fire posting a 48 on the back to force a playoff with Clay. Koch finished the playoff with a five while Clay finished with a six, thus making Koch the champion in his first ever APT event.
Once again, we seen some great golf today on a course that challenged everyone. TCI is listed as the second must play public course in Iowa and it lived up to its reputation. The staff was topnotch, allowing us to host another successful tournament in Iowa. I would like to thank all the players for their support and dedication throughout this inaugural season for the Iowa APT.
I would also like to thank our local sponsor Up to Par Golf Podcast, for coming out and getting some drone footage today, and meeting with our players. I look forward to a long and prosperous partnership with Matt and Jonathan.
Our final event will be September 25th-26th at Amana Colonies. Amana Colonies is another top 3 public course in Iowa and will be the perfect place to host the APT Iowa local finals. I look forward to seeing everyone there. This will be an epic ending to close out the 2021 APT Iowa season!
