The Charleston Amateur Players Tour returned to action Sunday for its first tournament in nearly a month, with competitors traveling to Orangeburg Country Club for an elevated event at one of the Midlands’ top courses.
Set along the Edisto River, Orangeburg Country Club blends a scenic setting with a layout that can challenge golfers from the opening tee shot.
Designed by award-winning architect Richard Mandell and opened in 2009, the course winds through a landscape of tall pines, rolling fairways and deep, strategically placed bunkers. On Sunday, golfers faced a course that rewarded accuracy and smart decision-making while offering views of the river throughout the round.
Orangeburg Country Club is ranked No. 45 among courses statewide in South Carolina and consistently ranks among the top five in the Midlands. Its combination of natural scenery and a demanding layout has made it a popular stop for golfers looking for both a competitive test and an enjoyable round.
The Charleston Amatuer Players Tour travels the Lowcountry of South Carolina, offering golfers of all skill levels a chance to compete in one of five different divisions. The tour also features Mid-Am and Senior net divisions, along with an optional cash skins game. Division winners are awarded cash and VISA gift card prizes each tournament.
Here’s a breakdown of the results from Sunday’s tournament by division:
Division 1 – Taylor Gove made four birdies on the back nine, firing a one-under par round of 71 to win by two strokes. Gove birded the 11th, 13th, 14th, and 17th holes on the back nine to card a round of 34 on the closing stretch.
Michael Huh and Alex Jackson tied for second place in the division with rounds of 73. Huh and Jackson led the division with six birdies, as Huh made three in a four-hole stretch to begin the back nine. Jackson birdied the eighth and ninth holes to move back to level par on the front nine.
Mike Cobb posted a round of 74 to finish fourth. Cobb took advantage of the par fives throughout the round, playing the holes in two-under par. Zake Masterson finished fifth with a round of 76, highlighted by a pair of back nine birdies on the 11th and 14th holes.
Division 2 – Sam Lewis played an impressive front nine, leading to a round of 73 and the top spot in Division 2. Lewis made eight pars and one birdie on the front nine, taking advantage of the par-three third hole where he made birdie.
Weston Brown finished second with a round of 75. Brown made two birdies on the back nine to shoot even-par on the nine-hole stretch.
AJ Lee, Grady “Chip” Brown, Grady Overholt, Craig Thigpen, and Wesley Jackson tied for third place to round out the top five. Lee and Brown each finished with two birdies as Overholt made three on the back nine. Thigpen and Jackson also finished with two birdies each.
Division 3 – Eighteen holes of golf were not enough to decide a winner in Division 3 as Lyn Rhode and William Klauss found themselves in a tie for the top spot as both golfers posted rounds of 76. In the end, it was Rhode who emerged victorious in the playoff.
Rhode made three birdies on the round, two of which came on the back nine. Despite a double bogey on the par-four 15th, Rhode carded a round of one-over par on the back nine.
Klauss played his best golf on the front nine, birding the par-four fifth hole to shoot even-par on the opening stretch. Klauss made five pars on the back nine to reach the playoff.
Justin Gainey and Ethan Vining tied for third place in the division with rounds of 80. Gainey’s round was highlighted by three birdies as Vining’s steady round included 10 pars. Matt Miller rounded out the top five in fifth place with a score of 81.
Division 4 – Ryan Riffle was the class of the field in Division 4, posting a round of 83 to win by four strokes. Riffle’s round featured a birdie on the par-four fourth hole as he shot 42 on the opening nine. Riffle made five pars on the back nine as he maintained his advantage on the leaderboard.
Eric Seibert, Brian Gregor, and Big Al Reynolds finished tied for second place as all three golfers recorded rounds of 87. Seibert and Reynolds both had birdies on the round as Seibert made his on the par-four 10th hole and Reynolds birdied the par-four 14th. Gregor avoided any score worse than a bogey on the front nine, and finished with six pars on the round.
Calvin Carter rounded out the top five in fifth place with a score of 89.
Division 5 – Randy Cox, John Greider and Phillip Bush tied for the top spot in Division 5 with rounds of 92 as when the dust settled in the playoff, it was Cox who secured first place. Cox made six pars on the round, four of which came on the front nine as he shot 43 on the opening stretch.
Greider and Bush finished tied for second place after the playoff. Greider made five pars on the round, including three in a row on holes 13-15. Bush made two birdies on the day, coming on the ninth and 10th holes.
Buddy Cowan finished fourth with a round of 95, followed by a three-way tie for fifth place including Anthony Johnson, Bill Turner and Vern Verna, as all three golfers posted rounds of 97.
Mid-Am (Net) – Sam Lewis and William Klauss shared the top honors in the Mid-Am net division as both golfers posted net rounds of four-under par, 68. Lewis made six birdies on the round, four of which came on the back nine as he played the stretch in four-under par.
Klauss led the division with seven net birdies and a net eagle. Klauss shot four-under par on the opening nine holes, playing the first seven holes in five-under par.
Wesley Jackson finished third with a round of three-under par 69. Jackson made six birdies on the round, three of which came in a four-hole stretch on the front nine.
Hank Stolz, Weston Brown, and Grady “Chip” Brown finished in a tie for fourth place as all three golfers posted net rounds of 70.
Senior (Net) – Five net birdies and a net eagle allowed Steve Daniels to claim the honors in the Senior net division, carding a round of 67 to clear the field by three strokes. Daniels made an eagle and two birdies on the front nine as he shot 33 on the nine-hole stretch.
Craig Thigpen finished second with a round of 70, two-under par. Thigpen made four birdies on the back nine en route to a round of three-under par, 33. Ernie Rowland and Brian Gregor tied for third place with rounds of 71, followed by a four-way tie for fifth place including Mike Hubert, John Benton, Doug Robertson and Randy Cox with rounds of even-par 72.
