Tournament Champions
The Club at Flying Horse provided a memorable day for the Mile High Denver Chapter of the Amateur Players Tour on May 28. Players arrived to chilly temperatures, low clouds, and uncertainty about the weather forecast. While conditions were cool during the morning, excitement was high as graduation ceremonies were taking place at the adjacent United States Air Force Academy.
Throughout the morning, players kept an eye toward the Academy grounds awaiting the conclusion of the graduation ceremony. Their patience was rewarded when the United States Air Force Thunderbirds roared directly overhead in a spectacular flyover marking the end of the ceremony. The jets passed directly over Flying Horse and provided an unforgettable experience for players throughout the course. Unfortunately, the low cloud ceiling forced cancellation of the Thunderbirds scheduled demonstration show approximately thirty minutes later. While players missed the aerial performance, the flyover alone was a remarkable highlight of the day.
By mid-afternoon, the clouds had lifted, revealing bright blue Colorado skies and beautiful playing conditions. Divisions 4 and 5 completed their rounds under perfect weather conditions, providing a fitting finish to another outstanding Denver Chapter tournament.
NOTABLES: Flying Horse once again demonstrated why it is one of the premier venues on the Denver APT schedule. The Tom Weiskopf design challenged players throughout the day with demanding approach shots, strategic bunkering, and fast greens.
Par breakers were plentiful despite the challenging setup. Emmett White provided a lot of excitement and continued the Eagle string for APT Denver by hitting an 8-iron ~180 yards to the green fringe and sinking his short putt on the 526-yard, downhill par-5 10th hole. Players across all divisions recorded numerous birdies, with several competitors stringing together impressive stretches of golf to remain in contention throughout the day. Bill Camping led the field with seven birdies, followed by Dale Syta, Eric Drucker, and Gary Wayne with four birdies each. Players that scored three birdies on the day were Colin Armistead, Rizzul Karki, Jack Wallin, Luke Wright, Isiah Ellison-Evans, Dave Goldman, Ryan Thomeczek and Jade Roberts. IMPRESSIVE!
DIVISION 1: Bill Camping captured the Division 1 Championship with a steady and consistent performance around Flying Horse. Camping navigated the difficult conditions and challenging layout better than the rest of the strong Division 1 field to earn the trophy and first-place prize money with a score of 69 (-3). Bill also had four birdies in a row on holes 8-11.
DIVISION 2: Jade Roberts continued his strong play this season and claimed the Division 2 title. Roberts remained composed throughout the round and separated himself from a talented field to secure the championship. Jade had a very impressive score of 73 (+1).
DIVISION 3: Antonio Feo earned the Division 3 Championship after a solid round on one of Colorado’s premier private golf courses. Feo’s consistent ball-striking and steady play throughout the day proved to be the difference in a tightly contested division. Antonio was extremely excited with his winning in his second APT Denver tournament. Antonio carded a score of 81 (+9) to win the division by a slim one-stroke margin over Evan Wilking and Eric Lucero (82).
DIVISION 4: Mark Corrigan had a strong performance in his first APT tournament by capturing the Division 4 title. Corrigan played particularly well during the improved afternoon conditions and earned both the trophy and first-place prize money. Corrigan (85/+13) battled former APT Denver winner Jeff Fulkerson (88/+16) all afternoon but pulled away near the end to win the Division.
DIVISION 5: Division 5 provided one of the most exciting finishes of the day. Mike Elder and Ray Lopez completed regulation play tied with scores of 95 (+23), forcing a sudden-death playoff to determine the champion. Both players matched each other on the first playoff hole before Elder secured the Division 5 Championship on the second playoff hole. The victory earned Mike the trophy while Lopez took home a well-deserved runner-up finish after an outstanding battle.
MID-AM NET: The Mid-Am Net competition required a scorecard playoff to determine the champion. Cody Canzona and Evan Wilking finished tied and split both the prize money and Player of the Year points. After the scorecard playoff was applied, Cody Canzona was awarded the championship trophy while both players shared an excellent performance throughout the day.
CLOSEST TO THE PIN CONTEST: The Denver Chapter Closest to the Pin contests continued to generate excitement and provide additional opportunities for players to win prize money. Congratulations to the winners who demonstrated exceptional shot making on the designated par-three holes. Mike Brookman won $76 for his shot on hole #2 that was 11 feet from the hole. Rizzul Karki also won $76 for hitting his shot 6’ 8” from the #13 hole. The CTP contests are funded by Chapter Owners Kirk and Brenda Hulbert and have quickly become a popular addition to Denver APT tournaments.
FOLDS OF HONOR 50/50 RAFFLE: Robert Webb was the winner of the Folds of Honor 50/50 Raffle. Robert took home $167 while an additional $168 was donated directly to Folds of Honor, the Amateur Players Tour’s national charitable partner supporting the families of fallen and disabled military service members.
The Mile High Denver Chapter would like to thank all players for participating in another outstanding tournament and extend special appreciation to The Club at Flying Horse staff for their hospitality and support. The combination of championship golf, beautiful course conditions, and the unforgettable Thunderbirds flyover made this a tournament that players will remember for many years to come.
