APT Memphis Battles Memphis National in Challenging Conditions
The APT Memphis Chapter returned to one of the area’s premier private layouts on Monday morning, taking on Memphis National Golf Club with a 9:00 AM shotgun start. Known for its demanding layout and fast greens, Memphis National proved once again to be a true test across all divisions.
With early spring conditions and a strong field, players were challenged from the opening tee shot to the final putt, making every stroke count in the Player of the Year race.
Division 1
Landon Garcia set the tone for the day, capturing the win with a solid round of 78 (+6). Garcia separated himself with consistent ball striking and avoided big mistakes on a course that punishes anything offline.
Cristian Serrano finished runner-up at 80 (+8), highlighted by one of the best statistical performances of the day with multiple birdies and an eagle.
Division 2
It was Jeff Avant who rose to the top in Division 2, posting an impressive 76 (+4)—one of the lowest rounds of the entire event. Avant’s steady play and ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities proved to be the difference.
Caleb Goodwin finished second at 80 (+8), continuing his strong play with one of the top “par breaker” performances of the day.
Division 3
Division 3 featured a tight race at the top, with Ken Grisham claiming victory after shooting 82 (+10). Grisham’s front nine set the tone, and he held on down the stretch to secure the win.
Close behind was Iceman Clark at 83 (+11), followed by a tie for third between Jim Atkinson and Jon Sylvester, both posting 85 (+13).
Division 4
Marshall Dean delivered one of the most impressive rounds of the day in Division 4, winning with an 85 (+13). His consistency and ability to manage the course gave him a comfortable margin.
Robert Joiner finished second at 89 (+17), while Justin Stevens and Chris Jones tied for third at 90 (+18).
Division 5
In Division 5, Steven Walkley took home the title with a round of 92 (+20). On a difficult setup, Walkley stayed composed and avoided big numbers to secure the win.
Michael Kelly finished second at 95 (+23), followed by Gregg Epps in third at 97 (+25).
Standout Performances
- Cristian Serrano (D1) led the field in par breakers with multiple birdies and an eagle
- Caleb Goodwin (D2) showcased scoring ability with 3 par breakers
- Several divisions saw tightly contested battles around the prize line, emphasizing how demanding Memphis National played
Final Thoughts
Memphis National once again proved why it’s one of the most respected and challenging courses in the Mid-South. From tee to green, players had to execute, stay patient, and manage their game to post a score.
With another event in the books, the Player of the Year race continues to heat up as we move deeper into the season.
Looking Ahead
The next APT Memphis event heads to Cherokee Valley Golf Club on May 17, where players will face another strong test with a layout that demands both accuracy and smart course management.
In the meantime, players looking to stay competitive have great opportunities nearby with the APT Arkansas Chapter hosting events at Pine Bluff on April 25 and Mystic Creek in El Dorado on May 2.
Be sure to take advantage of these chances to compete and keep your game sharp heading into Cherokee Valley.
