Tournament Champions
For players searching for New York amateur golf tournaments or premier Long Island golf events, the Amateur Players Tour opened its 2027 season on Wednesday, October 7th at Spy Ring Golf Club. A field of 23 players put the season’s first points on the board over the par-72 layout, and it took a pair of 69s to settle the top of the leaderboard.
In Division 1, the low round of the day was posted twice. Peter Zielinski of Levittown, NY and Steven Sullivan of Massapequa, NY each signed for 3-under 69, and the two tied at the top before Zielinski came away with the title in a playoff. Zielinski went out in 3-under 33 and got there the hard way, birdieing the par-3 5th — the toughest hole on the property on the day, playing better than a stroke over par, and the only birdie it surrendered to the entire field. He added an eagle at the par-5 9th, the lone eagle that hole gave up, birdied the 3rd, 11th, 12th and 15th, and came home in even-par 36. Sullivan took a completely different route: a bogey-free card with 15 pars, birdies at the par-4 6th, the par-5 9th and the par-4 13th, out in 2-under 34 and home in 1-under 35. Chris Vience of Massapequa Park, NY finished in 3rd, picking up birdies at the 1st and the par-5 18th.
Division 2 came down to a single stroke. Joseph Arnold of Bay Shore, NY built an even-par 72 out of symmetry and discipline — even-par 36 on the way out, even-par 36 on the way home, 14 pars, two bogeys and nothing worse all day — with birdies at the par-5 9th and the par-5 12th. Vick Tandon of Long Island City, NY pushed him to the last, making four birdies at the 6th, 7th, 12th and 18th, turning in 1-over 37 and matching Arnold with an even-par 36 coming home for 1-over 73 and runner-up honors. Two players finished within two of the lead. Justin DiMarco of Middle Island, NY was the most aggressive card in the division, five birdies in all — the 3rd, 4th, 9th, 12th and 15th — on the way to 5-over 77 and 3rd place.
Division 3 also needed extra holes. Glenn Kross, a visitor from the New Jersey/Philadelphia chapter who makes his home in Staten Island, NY, and Jimmy Tubbs of Garden City, NY both posted 12-over 84, and Kross took the title in the playoff. His round was a model of damage control — ten bogeys but only one score worse than that, out in 7-over 43 and back in 5-over 41. Tubbs did his best work late, going out in 9-over 45 before coming home in 3-over 39 to force the tie. Bill Debobes of Bethpage, NY took 3rd at 14-over 86 and closed with the shot of the division, an eagle at the par-5 18th that capped a 2-under finish over the last three holes.
In Division 4, Nick Croce of Lake Grove, NY won by three with an 18-over 90, and the back nine was where he made it stick: after going out in 13-over 49, he turned and played the inward half in 5-over 41. Joseph Mahoney of Patchogue, NY was next at 21-over 93. Eric Hubbard of Rockville Centre, NY and Marc Kettler of Wantagh, NY shared 3rd at 25-over 97, with Hubbard trimming four shots off his outward 51 with a 10-over 46 coming in.
Division 5 went to Bill Pridgen of Brooklyn, NY, who posted 32-over 104 for a five-shot win. Robert Alcabes of Sayville, NY took runner-up honors at 37-over 109.
The Mid-Am Net was the most one-sided result of the day. Steven Sullivan turned that bogey-free 69 into a net 2-under 70 and won by 14 strokes, adding the net title to his share of the low round of the day. PJ Vizzio of Whitestone, NY finished 2nd at net 12-over 84, opening with birdies at the 2nd and 3rd. Marc Kettler was 3rd at net 13-over 85.
The Senior Net produced a three-way tie at the top, and under tour rules there is no playoff in a net game — the points and the purse are shared. Joseph Arnold, Peter Zielinski and Vick Tandon all came in at net 2-over 74, six clear of the rest of the division. That made for two completed double-dips on the day: Zielinski won Division 1 and shared the Senior Net title, while Arnold won Division 2 and did the same. Tandon backed up his runner-up finish in Division 2 with a share of the senior crown.
Next up in the New York Metro chapter — the Fall Classic at Pine Hills Country Club on Sunday, October 25th. Space is limited and registration closes October 18th. One week later, the chapter heads to Windy Wind Watch on Sunday, November 1st, where registration closes October 25th.
