Amateur Players Tour of Oklahoma City Tackles Challenging Conditions at Firelake Golf Course
The Amateur Players Tour of Oklahoma City descended on Firelake Golf Course Sunday for the Shawnee Open, drawing a field of 40 players to a course in good condition. With 70-degree temperatures and winds gusting 10-15 mph, conditions seemed ripe for low scores.
However, strategic pin placements and fast greens proved formidable for competitors across all skill levels. The Bermuda greens featured significant speed and break, making it difficult to be aggressive on putts of every distance. While the pin positions were fair, tournament organizers positioned them in some of the most demanding locations on each green throughout the entire 18-hole layout, testing even the most skilled players in the field.
Division 1: Rose Claims First APT Victory in Dramatic Finish
Six players entered Division 1 vying for the championship. Through the first six holes, scores suggested favorable conditions, but the par-4 7th hole proved brutal—playing 14-over for the six-player field.
At the turn, Trevor Rose, Conner Compton, and Eddie Paez shared the lead at 2-over 37, with Michael Jordan close behind at 38. Paez’s chances evaporated with back-to-back doubles on 10 and 11, opening the door for a three-way battle. Through 14 holes, Compton held a slim advantage at 3-over, with Rose and Jordan trailing by one and two strokes, respectively. The tournament’s outcome hinged on the demanding closing stretch from holes 15-18. Rose navigated the gauntlet at even par, while his competitors faltered—Jordan posted 2-over and Compton stumbled to 4-over across those final four holes. Rose captured his first APT victory with a 4-over 74, while Jordan and Compton finished in a tie for second at 78.
Division 2: Jefferson Cruises to Second APT Victory
Ten players competed in Division 2, where Bradley Jefferson seized control early. Jefferson navigated the front nine with two bogeys and a birdie to post 1-over 36, claiming a one-stroke lead over Kirk Russell, who carded a steady 2-over 37. Jefferson extended his advantage through 14 holes, reaching 1-under par and building a commanding cushion. Meanwhile, Russell’s round unraveled with a string of bogeys and a double on 14, dropping him nine strokes off the pace. Jordan Wesley mounted a back-nine charge after struggling to a 7-over front nine. By the 15th hole, he had climbed into a tie with Russell at 8-over. Both players battled through a difficult finish, posting 4-over on the final three holes to share second place with matching 82s. Jefferson encountered trouble down the stretch, playing the final four holes in 5-over par. However, his substantial lead proved insurmountable, and he claimed the division title by seven strokes. The victory marked Jefferson’s second APT win of the 2026 season, following his first triumph during the fall 2025 schedule.
Division 3: Wilson Stages Veteran Comeback in Largest Field
The day’s largest field of 11 players appeared headed for a runaway when Michael Treat opened with a strong first 9. Despite four bogeys, Treat’s two birdies propelled him to 2-over 37 on the front nine—a three-stroke advantage over his nearest competitors. Randy Miller (40), DeVon Oku (41), and Stan Wilson (42) trailed in pursuit. Treat’s lead evaporated quickly on the back nine as he bogeyed five consecutive holes to open the inward half. Oku and Wilson capitalized on the opportunity, both playing the same stretch at 2-over to close the gap. Heading into the final four holes, Oku trailed by one and Wilson by two—setting up another dramatic finish reminiscent of Division 1.
The closing stretch proved disastrous for the leaders. Treat stumbled to 5-over across the final four holes, coming home with a back-nine 45 and a 82 total. Oku fared little better, posting 6-over on the finishing holes for a 43 on the back and 84 overall. Enter the veteran. Wilson, the tournament-tested competitor, played the final four holes in 2-over par, carding the day’s best back-nine score of 39. His steady finish completed a remarkable comeback from five strokes down at the turn, securing victory with an 81. The win marked Wilson’s second title of the 2026 season in just two starts and his third APT championship overall.
Division 4: Acuff Seizes Playoff Victory After Dramatic Collapse
Bryan Jennings controlled Division 4’s seven-player field through the front nine, posting 41 to lead veteran Neil Hill (43) and Wes Acuff (44). Jennings extended his advantage to four strokes through 14 holes and appeared poised to cruise to victory. Then came the now-infamous closing stretch. Jennings suffered a catastrophic collapse over the final four holes, hemorrhaging nine strokes and leaving the door wide open. Acuff seized the opportunity, making up all four strokes to force a playoff at day’s end. With momentum firmly in his corner, Acuff wasted no time on the first playoff hole, securing victory with a par against Jennings’ bogey. After several close calls throughout the season, Acuff finally broke through for his first win of 2026.
Division 5: Cogburn Maintains Wire-to-Wire Victory in Smallest Field
Late cancellations reduced Division 5 to just four players, but the competition remained fierce. Jared Cogburn established a three-stroke lead through the front nine with a 47, holding off Neil McGary and Kristopher Dobbins.
The back nine became a test of consistency as both Cogburn and McGary posted matching 46s. Cogburn’s steady play preserved his three-shot advantage from the turn, securing the wire-to-wire victory with a 93.
The win marked Cogburn’s second title of the 2026 season. A dedicated tour sponsor, Cogburn’s Patriot Bail Bonds serves as one of two sponsors for the Closest to the Pin contest, exemplifying his commitment to supporting Amateur Players Tour- Oklahoma City.
