Lowe and Davis Each Win Twice in a Day of Close Finishes

It was a series of tight contests when APT Portland visited Glendoveer East on May 15th, with all five divisions being decided by a single stroke or extra holes.

Players in the field could point to the par 3’s as the difference, as every division winner outplayed the runner-up on the one-shot holes. With three par 3’s on the front and just one on the back, each leaves its mark in a different way.

On paper, the easiest is a 150-yard shot, but water immediately in front of the green brings double bogey into play quickly. The next par 3 removes the water but forces players to pull headcovers with the hole stretching to 225 yards. The front nine then closes with a much shorter test at just 135 yards with elevation change.

Finally, the lone par 3 on the back plays a straightforward 175 yards, though front bunkers and a difficult green make it more challenging than it appears. By handicap ranking, there are three easier par 4’s on the side.

But the game was simple. Win the par 3’s and win your division. That’s exactly what the golfers below did.

    Division Breakdown

Mark Mollenkopf opened his day with a birdie on the first hole and did not look back, cruising to an easy victory in Division 1, shooting +7, 80.

The first playoff of the day came in Division 2 after Brahyam Merlin forced extra holes against Norman Davis by shooting two over on the back nine. Both golfers finished at +6, 79, but Davis eventually prevailed, earning an extra 115 Player of the Year points over Merlin.

Division 3 brought another close finish as Fade Bassett defeated Nirmal Shrestha by a single stroke. The two entered the back nine tied, but six pars and just three bogeys helped Bassett close at +8, 81.

It was a come-from-behind victory for Marcus Lowe in Division 4. Standing on the 10th tee, he trailed Mauricio Sanchez by four shots and Craig Campbell by seven. But after a back nine that included four pars, Lowe rallied to finish one shot ahead of both players at +12, 85.

Julio Lara captured Division 5 in a playoff over Brian Anderson, building momentum late with pars on two of his final three holes. Both players finished at +28, 101.

Just like in their Division 4 battle, Marcus Lowe edged Mauricio Sanchez by one shot to win the Mid-Amateur Net Division. Lowe carded four net birdies on each sideto finish at –2, 71.

In the lone division decided by more than one stroke, Norman Davis defeated Fade Bassett by two shots in the Senior Net Division after playing the par 4’s four shots better and finishing at –2, 71.
