Anderson and Soria Finish on Top in Aloha, OR Showdown

Shots were flying and putts were dropping all over the course, but especially on one green in particular when APT Portland teed off the North Course at Reserve Vineyards Golf Club on May 30th.

The North Course is one of the few courses playing host to a triple green, where you might see three different groups all putting out at the same time with Holes 1, 8, and 17 sharing a 43,000-square-foot green complex.

While a handful of difficult pin positions and several shots over water caused trouble for some, a few golfers gave their competitors little chance to contend with the average margin of victory across Divisions 2 through 5 coming in at 10 strokes.

    Division Breakdown

It was Mark Mollenkopf’s tournament to lose in Division 1, where he cruised to an easy victory. His best stretch of the day came on Holes 5 through 9, where he made four pars and a bogey on his way to a +15, 87.

The best individual round of the day came from Benjamin Ciobanu, who carded a +2, 74 to win Division 2. He made three birdies and played the par 5s at –2, beating out Paul Matis, who also played well and shot +9, 81.

Sam Woodward took the lead on Hole 4 and did not give it up the rest of the day on his way to victory in Division 3. Matt Williams did his best to keep it close, but Woodward’s +15, 87 was enough to win handily.

The closest finish of the day came in Division 4, where Jesus Jared Soria defeated Mauricio Sanchez by five strokes. Soria shot +10, 82 and played the final five holes at +1, while Sanchez played the same stretch at +6, ultimately proving to be the difference.

Division 5 was a runaway from the start, with Brian Anderson dominating the field on his way to a +16, 88. He came out firing, playing the opening four holes at +1 and added a birdie later on Hole 7.

The Net Divisions are where things got a bit more interesting. In the Mid-Amateur Net DivisionJesus Jared Soria’s -4, 68 delivered him a narrow victory over Mauricio Sanchez. The win was highlighted by a 3-for-1 on the par-3 16th hole.

The Senior Net Division was also won with a score of –4, 68, this time by Brian Anderson, who played the opening seven holes at –5 and built a lead that no one could catch. A late push from Craig Campbell, including back-to-back birdies to finish, made things interesting down the stretch, but it was not enough to overcome the early deficit.

    Top Money Winners

The big winner on the day was Brian Anderson, who took home $200. He earned $155 by winning both Division 4 and the Senior Net Division, then added another $45 through skins and super skins.

The only other two-division winner was Jesus Jared Soria, who finished with $195 despite not winning any skins. He collected $95 for winning Division 3 and another $100 for taking the Mid-Amateur Net Division.

    Best of the Day

Benjamin Ciobanu shot even par on the front nine after opening with two early bogeys, making up for them with birdies on Holes 7 and 8.

Paul Matis earned 11 total skins on the day. While he ran into a tough divisional opponent in Benjamin Ciobanu, two birdies and 10 pars helped him head home with $75.
