Close Battles and Big Paydays Highlight Tri-Mountain Stop
APT Portland headed north on October 18th to Tri-Mountain Golf Course in Ridgefield, Washington, where 11 different players claimed skins, making it a payday for many. The course played firm and fast as the season approached its winter pause.
With fall foliage at its peak and views of Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Adams, and Mt. Hood in the distance, Tri-Mountain provided a scenic backdrop, but it was a series of close finishes that defined the day.
Division Breakdown
Things kicked off with a playoff in Division 2, where Benjamin Ciobanu defeated Brian Merlin after each shot +7 (79). Merlin charged on the back nine and, despite a double bogey on the closing hole from Ciobanu to tie things, he recovered and closed things out in extra holes.
Kristian Alexander finished in first place in Division 3, carding a double bogey-free round of +6 (78). His closest competitor, Nirmal Shrestha, also avoided making any doubles. The two made the turn tied, but Alexander’s stretch of seven consecutive pars from holes 11–17 was enough to secure a two-shot victory.
It wasn’t smooth sailing early for Scott Boyd in Division 4, but a birdie on the 9th hole shifted momentum as he went on to shoot +9 (81) and win the division by three strokes.
In Division 5, Jesus David Soria rolled the field with an impressive round featuring 10 pars and two birdies. Soria finished at +11 (83), eight shots clear of the rest of the division.
It was a hard-fought battle in the Mid-Amateur Net Division, but Kristian Alexander separated himself from the pack, posting a winning score of –6. Alexander made just one net bogey on the day in a division where five players finished under par.
The Senior Net Division came down to the wire, with Bill Peabody finishing ahead of Cory Dobak by a single shot. Dobak played the final two holes at +1, while Peabody finished them at –1, coming up clutch when it mattered the most.
Top Money Winners
There was a total pool of more than $1,400, and while 15 golfers earned payouts, a few stood in a class of their own.
Kristian Alexander led the way, taking home $326 after winning both a gross and net division, along with adding a skin. He brought in $195 from the Mid-Amateur Net Division alone.
Scott Boyd also turned in a strong payday, earning $277 through a division win, a runner-up net finish, two skins, and a super skin.
Benjamin Ciobanu added to his playoff victory by earning $128 across multiple prizes.
Rounding out the top winners, Bill Peabody brought home $100 after claiming the Senior Net Division.
Best of the Day
While neither made it into the winner’s circle, both Daniel Landa and Ken Malmin each made a pair of birdies, the only birdies in all of Division 3.
Mauricio Sanchez and Niranjan Shrestha captured the Closest to the Pin contests, each adding $45 to their total for the day.
